According to distributor Showbox, as of the morning of March 24, the mystery film "Exhuma" (Vietnamese title: Grave Digging Ghost) became the first film to surpass 10 million ticket sales in Korea this year. The film reached this milestone on its 32nd day in theaters.
This is the first film to surpass 10 million viewers since "12.12: The Day" - reaching the important milestone of 10 million tickets on December 24, 2023.
Since its release on February 22, 2023, "Grave Digger" has continuously maintained its leading position in the domestic box office chart every day. As of Sunday, "Grave Digger" has become the 23rd Korean film and the first mystery film in the history of Korean cinema to attract more than 10 million viewers in its home country.
“Ghost Digger,” directed by Jang Jae Hyun (“Svaha: The Sixth Finger,” “The Priests”), unravels the bizarre, supernatural events that involve a feng shui master (Choi Min Sik), an undertaker (Yoo Hae Jin), and two shamans (Kim Go Eun, Lee Do Hyun) as they relocate mysterious graves in exchange for a hefty sum of money.
With “The Ghost in the Grave”, veteran actor Choi Min Sik has the second work in his career to sell over 10 million tickets, after “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” (2014) - the highest-grossing Korean film of all time with 17.61 million tickets.
For Yoo Ha Jin, this is his 4th work to reach 10 million viewers, after “The King and the Clown” (2005) with 10.51 million tickets, “Veteran” (2015) with 13.41 million tickets, and “A Taxi Driver” (2017) with 12.18 million tickets.
Notably, "Grave Digger" is the first movie to reach 10 million ticket sales for both Kim Go Eun and Lee Do Hyun.
This achievement is even more meaningful when "The Ghost in the Tomb" is the debut film of Lee Do Hyun - a young actor born in 1995, who is currently absent due to military service.
