Non-public student population increased to 22.76%
According to this statistic, by 2024, the country will have 243 universities (176 public and 67 private). Accordingly, the scale of universityeducation is 2,355,711 students, an increase of 319,022 students compared to 2023. Public university students are 1,819,416, non-public university students are 536,295.
Of which, the number of newly recruited students is 601,966, an increase of 57,448 compared to 2023. Non-public universities recruited 161,268 new students (26.8%), bringing the total number of non-public students to 22.76%.
In 2024, the total training scale of university education will increase by more than 300,000 students compared to 2023.

Compared to the target set by Resolution 35 of the Government (on enhancing the mobilization of social resources for investment in education and training development in the 2019-2025 period), by 2025, the scale of non-public students will reach 22.5%, which means that university education has achieved the target of non-public students. However, it is still very low compared to the previous target in the Resolution on fundamental and comprehensive innovation of Vietnamese university education in the 2006-2020 period, which is 40% of non-public students by 2020.
Meanwhile, new master's and doctoral recruitment also increased by 6,640 compared to 2023, bringing the total training scale of these two levels to 108,674, an increase of 8,661 compared to 2023.
In 2024, university education will provide the labor market with 313,572 bachelors and engineers, while in 2023 it will be 228,092, an increase of 85,480 human resources.
Full-time lecturers in non-public schools are higher but professors and associate professors are lower
According to these statistics, the total number of permanent lecturers in the 2023-2024 school year is 88,031 (60,009 public, 24,022 non-public). If dividing the proportion of lecturers by type of school, on average each public school has 341 lecturers, each non-public school has 358 permanent lecturers.
The average student/teacher ratio of public schools is 30 students/teacher, and that of non-public schools is 22 students/teacher.
In the 2023-2024 school year, the country will have a total of 28,862 lecturers with doctoral degrees, 49,229 with master's degrees, 4,552 with university degrees and 1,388 with other degrees.
Although the average number of permanent lecturers in non-public schools is higher than that of public schools, the proportion of PhDs in non-public schools is lower, only 24.6%; master's degrees account for the majority, at 64.7%. Meanwhile, public universities have a ratio of PhDs of 38.2% and master's degrees of 56.1%.
In addition, the total number of professors and associate professors in public universities is 4,585, and in non-public universities is 1,249. Thus, public universities have 3.67 times more professors than non-public universities.
