Launching Vietnam's first Stained Glass Art Museum

(PLVN) - On March 15, 2025, the Stained Glass Art Museum was officially launched to the public. The Stained Glass Art Museum was established under Decision No. 5058/QD-UBND of the Hanoi People's Committee, and is the first museum in Vietnam on the subject of glass and stained glass.

The Art Glass Museum is located in the Da Vinci Camp complex in Ba Trai commune, Ba Vi district, Hanoi .

The Stained Glass Museum was formed on the basis of a collection of more than 1,500 valuable glass and stained glass art objects of Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang - diplomat , journalist, President of the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations, Director of the Stained Glass Art Museum.

Sharing about his passion for stained glass and the reason for building this special museum, diplomat and journalist Nguyen Xuan Thang said: “I have spent nearly 40 years searching for and collecting valuable stained glass works from all over the world . The idea of building a Stained Glass Art Museum was first conceived by me from my love and passion for this unique art form. Looking at each stained glass work, we not only feel the artistic beauty from the skillful craftsmanship, creativity and dedication of the author, but also contain profound cultural and historical values of each period and each country. I hope that the establishment of a Stained Glass Art Museum in Vietnam will contribute to preserving and promoting the value of stained glass art, diversifying the field of conservation and museums in Vietnam, and can bring a lot of inspiration and encourage creative ideas in the application of glassmaking technology and stained glass art”.

Stained glass and stained glass art is a technical and technological field, as well as an important applied art and fine arts field that has long been associated with human life in every country.

According to Diplomat Nguyen Xuan Thang: At the end of the 19th century, with the continuous development of stained glass manufacturing technology and the rapid popularization of stained glass art into life, more and more lines of stained glass and special colored glass appeared, attracting many people interested and passionate about collecting, wanting to learn about stained glass and stained glass art. "But unfortunately, until today, the reality shows that the number of specialized museums on stained glass and stained glass art in countries around the world only accounts for a very small proportion of the world museum system." - he said.

The Director of the Stained Glass Art Museum shared: After its establishment, the Stained Glass Art Museum will have the task of collecting, classifying, systematically preserving and displaying artifacts related to stained glass, stained glass art in general of Vietnam and internationally; Organizing systematic research and evaluation of the history of stained glass, the appearance of stained glass art, product lines, masterpieces and stained glass art works to serve the long-term development orientation of the museum; Providing knowledge about stained glass and stained glass art for those interested in and researching stained glass, stained glass art, contributing to fostering the level of understanding of art, improving the taste and aesthetics of the public; Organizing domestic and international exchange activities, exchanging knowledge and experience about stained glass art for experts, artisans, artists, collectors in the field of research, production and application of stained glass...

Each stained glass work contains profound cultural and historical values of each period and each country.

At the inauguration ceremony of the Museum, Diplomat Nguyen Xuan Thang said: All artifacts and most of the assets of the Museum as well as the Da Vinci Camp complex will be donated to the community. These material assets with spiritual significance are placed under the management and operation of the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations with the aim of bringing useful values in the cause of improving people's knowledge and quality of life, including building a Cultural Development Fund and contributing a part of the value to the activities of non-governmental UNESCO in Vietnam.

Hopefully, the Museum's exhibition house with a design that has not been repeated in Vietnam will bring surprise and inspiration to visitors, becoming a destination with new and attractive cultural and artistic values in Hanoi, especially for Ba Vi - one of the key tourist centers of the Capital." - The director of the stained glass museum expressed his wish.
