Quang Ninh Ha Long City organized a peak inspection period combined with a campaign to collect waste in Ha Long Bay with the participation of many forces.
The inspection and waste collection activities will take place continuously for a month, from March 26, with the participation of police, army, youth volunteers and people.
The move comes after many reports of garbage floating in Ha Long Bay in "rows" during the first months of the year, the time when international tourists visit the scenic spot the most, causing many visitors to express disappointment.

According to Quang Ninh provincial authorities, the source of waste in Ha Long Bay comes from materials and foam buoys scattered during the process of restoring order in illegal aquaculture in neighboring localities and waste from sewers and drainage ditches in residential areas on shore. In addition, the activities of fishing boats and tourist boats staying overnight in the bay also generate a significant amount of waste.
Every day, the Ha Long City People's Committee and the Bay Management Board collect about 4 tons of waste, mainly buoys, foam, plastic bags, bamboo rafts, and some household waste. "Garbage collection in the bay takes place regularly, and management units have a hard time maintaining sanitation along the shore and in the bay," said a leader of the Ha Long City People's Committee.

In addition to the garbage collection team, Ha Long City has assigned the People's Committees of coastal communes and wards to regularly collect and clean up coastal areas and open ditches, not allowing garbage to accumulate and flow out to sea.
In the long term, Ha Long City has proposed to the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province to transfer all waste collection activities in the bay to a single point for Ha Long City to handle and research the construction of a shield to prevent waste from drainage sewers from residential areas from flowing directly into Ha Long Bay.
In September 2023, when recognizing Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba archipelago as a World Heritage Site, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee also expressed concern about pollution at the heritage site and called on Vietnam to strengthen measures to resolve it.
