Negav (real name Dang Thanh An) apologized on his personal page, explaining to the audience the saying "Mom, do you think it's right to let me stay home from school?" at the Live concert Anh trai say hi on the evening of September 28. The male rapper affirmed that he did not intend to encourage people to stay home from school.

During the music night on September 28th, which attracted about 20,000 spectators, right after the performance of First Love Too Drunk , the group of Negav, Erik, Quang Hung MasterD, and Phap Kieu had an audience interaction. From the stage, Negav suddenly asked: "Do you think it's right for me to take a day off from school?". The question was not the right time or place, and immediately became a hot topic of discussion on online forums with many conflicting opinions.

That same night, the male rapper sent a message to his fan group to thank them for their support at the concert, and apologized and explained the above statement. However, his performance mixed with English and Vietnamese made the audience react even more.

Audience member Minh Anh said: “Actually, when Negav shared his story about dropping out of school before, no one criticized him, because everyone’s path to success is different. But what he said today on stage in front of 20,000 people, including many students, is very wrong. Even though he may not have meant it that way, the way he expressed it was inappropriate. Space and timing are very important. When you become famous, you need to be careful; being too happy or talking too much is a double-edged sword.”

Audience member Tuan Son also expressed: “It’s not wrong to not read books, but you shouldn’t stand in front of a crowd and say that you think it’s right not to read books. When you become famous, your words, actions, and manners will influence a part of the youth, and even the children will take them as an example. Negav’s fans are all children. Negav and other young artists should be more disciplined with themselves and correct their way of speaking. Not to mention, when you apologize, you don’t write Vietnamese well and you still add half Western and half Vietnamese. It’s extremely annoying!”

There were also some viewers who sided with Negav: “Many people criticized Negav, wanting to teach him a lesson. But Negav just wanted to send a message to his mother. If anyone doesn't like it, cover your ears. Many people who don't go to college or drop out of college still live well. There's nothing wrong with living well.” Some viewers were more gentle: “Everyone should be happy. You're just in your early 20s, and your success came unexpectedly, so it's understandable that you overreacted. You're just having too much fun and you're just saying the wrong thing.”

Facing the backlash, on the morning of September 29, Negav officially apologized on Facebook and Instagram. The rapper wrote: “Negav caused a misunderstanding when he shared in public about going to school and dropping out. This is my personal, sincere sharing to my mother, in the way I usually talk to my mother, and I absolutely do not encourage my friends to drop out of school like me and take pride in it. Negav knows he chose the wrong context to speak, so he wants to publicly and clearly share it here with everyone. I sincerely apologize for causing this big misunderstanding and making the audience angry.”

Negav affirmed to the media, newspapers, and talk shows that he is not a dropout for others to follow. He promised to control his words more carefully from now on.

Negav's Facebook apology post

Last night, after this statement, a series of photos of vulgar posts by Dang Thanh An's account (believed to be Negav's) in a scandalous group continued to be shared rapidly across social networks. The content of the posts from 2020 from the above account was not pure, even very offensive and these posts have now been deleted. Negav, who had just had the opportunity to shine from the show Anh trai say hi with a pure, humorous image, is now facing the risk of "image collapse".

Artists have always been influential people, especially to young audiences. Therefore, along with having good products, it is also necessary to have a sense of social responsibility and appropriate statements to spread good things, especially in the context of social networks development. Negav's lesson is also a common lesson for many other young artists.
