During the May holiday, Mount Tai (Shandong Province, China) welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors every day. The jostling and long queues on the steps leading to the top left many people exhausted.
However, the risky behavior of a couple is becoming the center of controversy. A video recorded on May 4 shows that, amid the crowd of people lining up on the mountain, the couple unexpectedly chose to climb over the cliff instead of taking the main staircase.
Almost died because of taking a shortcut: Couple fell while climbing a cliff in Thai Son (Video: CGTN).
While the young man was carrying the girl on his shoulders to cross an artificial wall, he slipped and they both fell off the cliff.
At that moment, the young man got stuck on a narrow ledge and managed to grab the girl's legs as she was hanging in mid-air. The girl hit her head on the rock and bushes as she fell, but thanks to the young man's tight grip, she did not fall into the abyss.
After the fall, both were not seriously injured. Witnesses at the scene said they were able to stand up, walk slowly and find their way out of the danger zone.
After being shared on social media, the video attracted more than 8 million views and thousands of comments. Most of the comments expressed outrage at the couple's disregard for life.

"They were lucky to survive. You can't risk your life to get a few minutes ahead of others," one netizen wrote.
Another person expressed: "If they were lovers, this guy would be a good lover, clinging to his girlfriend's leg until the end, between life and death."
However, many people also criticized the tourist area for being overcrowded, leading to dangerous behavior. One person wrote: "We cannot sacrifice the safety and experience of tourists just to sell tickets. We need to strictly control the number of people going up the mountain."
According to the South China Morning Post , in response to public reaction, the management board of Mount Tai said it would increase staff at crowded spots to ensure safety during the peak tourist season.

Mount Tai is 1,545m high and is one of the Five Sacred Mountains, the five most sacred mountains in China. Since 1987, it has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Tourists often climb the mountain at night to watch the sunrise on the mountain top.
According to statistics, in just the first 4 days of the May Day holiday, Thai Son welcomed 285,000 visitors, up 0.5% over the same period last year and setting a new record. Although the tourist area applies advance booking and limits the number of visitors per day, the pressure is still very high during peak times.
