The Dong Dang - Tra Linh Expressway has a total length of 121 km, divided into two investment phases with a total investment of nearly 23,000 billion VND. Spanning across Lang Son and Cao Bang provinces, phase 1 of the project is over 93 km long, including 64 overpasses crossing the Ky Cung and Bang Giang rivers, along with numerous streams and provincial roads. Given the geological structure and rugged terrain, coupled with the prolonged natural disasters of rain and floods in the area, this is one of the most challenging highway projects currently underway in the country. Overcoming challenges such as severe natural disasters, rugged terrain, and complex geological conditions, more than 3,000 project officials, engineers, and workers persevered on hundreds of construction sites to drill through mountains and open roads. To date, the value of output has reached 6,219/6,828 billion VND, equivalent to more than 91% of the plan for opening the route in phase 1. Phase 1 of the Dong Dang - Tra Linh expressway project includes two tunnels through mountains, named after two locations associated with the 1950 Border Campaign: That Khe and Dong Khe. The That Khe tunnel (Trang Dinh commune, Lang Son province) is approximately 200m long and is located in Trang Dinh commune, Lang Son province. Currently, workers are constructing the outer foundation of the tunnel shell and cleaning the tunnel tubes.
At the Dong Khe tunnel area (nearly 500m long), construction teams are focusing on completing the retaining walls, drainage system, roof structure, plaza area, and the road connecting the two tunnel entrances. At the Km58 area (Dong Khe commune, Cao Bang province), after only two days of deployment, the construction force has laid more than 1km of asphalt concrete. Currently, the asphalt paving line is still operating day and night to increase production to approximately 2,000 tons per day. Working on the Dong Dang - Tra Linh construction site, driver Tran Van Cong said that he and his colleagues do not hesitate to work through the night and holidays to speed up production. During this "final push" phase, construction teams are urgently laying asphalt pavement throughout Cao Bang province.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Tuan, Deputy General Director of Dong Dang - Tra Linh Expressway Joint Stock Company, said: "In the past period, we have continued to closely coordinate with consulting and supervision units and contractors to increase personnel and take advantage of favorable weather conditions to complete the paving of 7 km of asphalt concrete road surface in Cao Bang province from now until December 19th." The repeated storms and floods this year have significantly impacted construction activities, causing nearly 100 billion VND in losses for investors and contractors. The actual construction time this year, starting from the site handover date (March 30th), was only about 3 months. Although the project was scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026 according to the contract, the investors have overcome difficulties, ensuring the road will be open this year and striving to shorten the completion time by at least 3 months compared to the contract.
Upon completion, the Dong Dang - Tra Linh project will connect with the Huu Nghi - Chi Lang and Bac Giang - Lang Son expressways to form a vital international expressway axis, connecting the trade of goods from Vietnam to China and Europe, contributing to enhancing the competitiveness of the economy and creating new impetus for socio-economic development in the Northeast region.
