As the first segment of the Eastern North-South Expressway, the Huu Nghi Border Gate - Chi Lang Expressway project commenced on April 21, 2024. The nearly 60km long route passes through 11 communes and wards in Lang Son province, with a total investment of over 11,000 billion VND and is being implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The Huu Nghi - Chi Lang Expressway starts at Km1+800, connecting to the road leading to the Huu Nghi border gate, and ends at Km44+749.67 (in Nhan Ly commune, Lang Son province).

Previously, the construction unit set a target of completing 50km of the route as directed by the Government and the Ministry of Construction , including 19km of asphalt concrete, creating a distinct appearance for the expressway and contributing to realizing the goal of connecting the 3,000km expressway network from Cao Bang to Ca Mau.

The road, designed with six lanes for motor vehicles, traverses the complex mountainous terrain of Lang Son province. Representatives from the contractor stated that the construction process faced numerous difficulties and challenges.

The Huu Nghi Border Gate – Chi Lang expressway project has a total of 38 bridges. The bridge cluster at Km41+450 – Km41+825 – Km42+825 (Nhan Ly commune) alone is over 1km long, and in mid-December, construction workers were rushing to complete the bridge deck.

Along the 59.2km length of the route, contractors have mobilized more than 2,800 personnel and 1,230 pieces of equipment, deploying over 148 construction teams. The value of work completed to date has reached 3,942/4,572 billion VND, equivalent to nearly 90% of the required output.

Mr. Tran Van Chuan, Deputy Director of the Huu Nghi Border Gate - Chi Lang Expressway Project Management Board, said that with little time left until December 19th, the unit is determined to accelerate construction, working day and night to complete the project and open the route, fulfilling the trust of the Government , the local authorities, and the people of Lang Son province.

On the construction site, the teams working on this section are operating continuously in 3 shifts and 4 teams from day to night, making the most of every hour to complete the final items and get the road ready for opening.

Once operational, the project will seamlessly connect with the Bac Giang – Lang Son expressway, contributing to the formation of the North-South expressway axis, strengthening connectivity between China and Vietnam and the ASEAN region. The route will also create a strategic transportation corridor in the Northeast region, facilitating the flow of goods across the Vietnam-China border, promoting border trade development, and reducing accidents and congestion on National Highway 1.
