Dr. Bui Ngoc Quang, Deputy Director in charge of the Museum, said that the program "Celebrating the Year of the Dragon: Cultural Flavors of Hoi An" aims to create opportunities for the public to explore the traditional Tet holiday and cultural heritage of Hoi An. "Collaborating with Hoi An city to introduce traditional crafts and folk art contributes to honoring the cultural values of the area in its journey to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The program hopes to create a beneficial playground for young people, helping to enhance their understanding of the traditional Tet holiday in general and the cultural heritage of Hoi An in particular. From there, young people will better understand and cherish the traditional culture of their ancestors and raise awareness of protecting and promoting heritage values in contemporary society."
Participating in the program, locals and tourists have the opportunity to learn about traditional crafts such as lantern making, Thanh Ha pottery, and Kim Bong carpentry from folk artisans. In addition, visitors can enjoy Quang Nam folk songs, ritual singing, the Ba Trao Cau Ngu performance, and the Bai Choi game from Hoi An. Traditional dishes are also introduced to the public through the flavors of Quang Nam noodles, Cao Lau, Banh Dap, and Banh Bong Hong...
In addition, creative bamboo carving, originating from the Kim Bong carpentry craft, will also be showcased on this occasion. All these activities will be performed by 40 people from Hoi An in this year's program.
This year, the program features a special event: Hoi An Night: Lighting Up the Heritage, open free of charge from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM on the 8th and 9th days of the Lunar New Year (February 17th and 18th, 2024). This activity provides an opportunity for the public to explore folk art and traditional crafts associated with Hoi An Ancient Town. The space of Hoi An Ancient Town is recreated in the dazzling light of lanterns, featuring artisans making pottery, woodworking, lanterns, and bamboo sculptures. Those who enjoy activities can participate in games like blindfolded pot smashing, traditional folk singing, and folk song practice.
In addition, young people have the opportunity to learn about the traditional Tet holiday and culture of Hoi An with the support of technology through interactive screen experiences and a dragon drawing competition exploring the children of the dragon… Tourists will have impressive check-in photos in the Hoi An ancient town space right in the heart of Hanoi .
A new feature of this program is the application of technology in exploring and discovering traditional cultural heritage. The public has the opportunity to participate in activities such as "Joyful Gift-Giving: Discovering the Meaning of Tet"; QR Tour: Exploring the Year of the Dragon in the museum's exhibition space; Dragon Painting Competition and discovering the offspring of the dragon... These activities both utilize technology to create diverse interactive experiences that attract young people and incorporate the introduction of relevant cultural information. Through these activities, the significance of cultural heritage is conveyed to a wide audience in a simple and easily understandable way.
STEM activities, which guide children in making toys related to the Tet holiday and explore scientific knowledge, are also introduced to enrich their experiences. These activities contribute to diversifying approaches to engaging young people and bringing cultural heritage to the younger generation.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An city, said that Hoi An greatly appreciates participating in the event at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology through the program "Celebrating the Year of the Dragon: Cultural Flavors of Hoi An" with the participation of more than 40 artisans from Hoi An, including the special program "Hoi An Night: Lighting Up Heritage Together".
"We have strived to select and showcase the most simple yet representative values of Hoi An's cultural heritage in Quang Nam at this event. In a small space designed to resemble a corner of Hoi An's streets, we can participate in activities such as lantern making, Thanh Ha pottery making, Kim Bong woodworking, learning about the witty and profound melodies of folk songs and chants, performing the Ba Trao Cau Ngu ritual, playing the Bai Choi folk game, or enjoying and experiencing Hoi An's 'hundreds of delicious things' through the flavors of Quang noodles, Cao Lau, Banh Dap, and White Rose cakes...", shared Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An city.
Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Cam, Director of the Culture, Sports and Broadcasting Center of Hoi An City, shared that this is a good opportunity for the people of Hoi An to introduce their cultural heritage directly to the public in the capital city. "We hope to honor the cultural heritage values of the locality as well as create opportunities for exchange and cooperation for Hoi An. Through these practical activities, we will contribute to affirming the values of handicrafts and folk art in Hoi An's journey to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, while promoting and introducing the image of Hoi An to a large number of Vietnamese and international tourists.”
The program aims to bring satisfaction to the people of Hanoi who deeply love and want to learn about the culture of Quang Nam and Central Vietnam; at the same time, it contributes to warming the hearts and minds of the people of Hoi An and the Quang Nam expatriates living in the capital, as they yearn for their homeland. This is also an opportunity to introduce the unique features of traditional crafts and folk art in Hoi An's journey to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
