Samsung launches Galaxy XR virtual reality glasses with integrated artificial intelligence

Galaxy XR is the first device to run on the Android XR platform developed by Samsung in collaboration with US-based multinational technology groups Google and Qualcomm Inc.

On October 21, Samsung Electronics officially launched the Galaxy XR augmented reality glasses, which are integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) technology and have a beautiful and lightweight design, thereby providing a more comfortable experience for users.

Samsung hopes this new product will help the company make its mark in the smart wearable device market for virtual reality experiences, which is a field where multinational technology corporations Meta and Apple currently dominate.

Powered by multimodal AI technology capable of processing multiple forms of input such as voice and video images, the platform allows users to interact with extended reality (XR) content using voice commands, eye tracking, and hand gestures in 3D space.

Google's maps, photos, and YouTube apps are all available on the Galaxy XR, while Gemini Live, a real-time voice assistant developed by Google, helps users communicate interactively.

The Galaxy XR also brings a variety of sports programming in XR format through partnerships with major content providers and sports organizations such as Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Basketball Association (NBA).

According to Samsung, users with nearsightedness or farsightedness can attach detachable vision correction lenses to the device using magnets for clearer vision.

“This is the starting point of our vision to build a new XR ecosystem with Google,” said Lim Seong Taek, Vice President of Samsung’s Devices Division.

The Galaxy XR will be available from October 22 in Korea and the US for 2.69 million won (equivalent to 1,880 USD), which is about half the price of the Vision Pro model designed by Apple.

Analysts say that with such a price, Galaxy XR can become a formidable competitor in the high-end virtual reality glasses segment, especially in the enterprise market.
