A day after a shocking theft at France's Louvre Museum, the Italian Ministry of Culture announced on October 20 that it is developing security systems using artificial intelligence (AI), capable of identifying suspicious behavior around priceless artifacts.
In a statement, the Ministry of Culture said its Museums Agency is implementing two important pilot projects focused specifically on archaeological sites. Since 2024, the program has been funded with a total of more than 70 million euros ($82 million) from European resources.
The new initiatives announced aim to improve prevention and monitoring tools using AI, big data analytics and cybersecurity. These systems are capable of intelligently analyzing video , detecting unusual behavior and suspicious movements, while fully complying with privacy regulations and triggering timely predictive alerts.
With the help of specially trained algorithms, the system is able to identify risky behaviors and signals with increasing accuracy.
Italy's Culture Ministry stressed that protecting cultural heritage is now the country's top priority, although it did not directly mention the theft at the French museum.
Previously, four people used a forklift to break into the Louvre Museum in broad daylight and took only seven minutes to steal many priceless pieces of jewelry. The incident sparked debate about security at museums./.
