On the afternoon of August 12, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha received General Director of Samsung Vietnam Complex Choi Joo Ho.
At the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister highly appreciated the important and pioneering role of Samsung Vietnam in the Vietnam-Korea economic cooperation relationship in general and the business communities of the two countries in particular; as well as the process of digital economic and green economic transformation in Vietnam.
Mr. Choi Joo Ho reported to the Deputy Prime Minister about some business results of Samsung Vietnam in recent times.
Accordingly, Samsung Vietnam currently has 6 manufacturing plants, 1 research and development center, with a total accumulated investment capital of 22.8 billion USD. Samsung Vietnam's export turnover from the beginning of the year to July 2024 reached 33.5 billion USD, an increase of 5% over the same period.
The General Director of Samsung Vietnam expressed his appreciation for the Vietnamese Government's issuance of Decree No. 80/2024/ND-CP dated July 3, 2024, regulating the direct power purchase agreement (DPPA) mechanism between renewable energy generators and large electricity users.
According to Mr. Choi Joo Ho, Samsung Vietnam wishes to be facilitated to increase the rate of electricity use from renewable energy for production, at reasonable prices and costs, contributing to the implementation of Vietnam's commitment to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to 0 (Net Zero) by 2050.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha emphasized that immediately after the DPPA mechanism was issued, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to urgently review and issue criteria for selecting renewable energy power projects connected to the national grid to include in the implementation plan of Power Plan 8, if they ensure system safety, transmission capacity, economic efficiency, etc. As for renewable energy power projects not connected to the national grid, there is no capacity limit.
In addition, Vietnam will accompany and encourage businesses to promote green transformation and reduce carbon emissions through the development of regulations on emission limits, carbon credit markets, carbon tax policies, green finance, land incentives, etc.
The Deputy Prime Minister requested foreign enterprises, including Samsung Vietnam, to continue to make practical proposals and recommendations to immediately remove difficulties and obstacles in the implementation of the DPPA mechanism; towards operating the Vietnamese electricity market according to a full market mechanism.
The Deputy Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam Electricity Group, and relevant ministries and branches to continue working with Samsung Vietnam on the recommendations raised during the meeting.
In the coming time, the Deputy Prime Minister suggested that Samsung continue to pay attention to and invest in research and development centers and technology transfer for new industries such as semiconductor chips.
