On May 21, flights to and from the city of Catania, in eastern Sicily, Italy, were canceled after Mount Etna erupted and covered the entire runway at the city's airport with ash.

Airport officials said air services would only resume when safety conditions were assured. Images posted on Italian media showed thick ash covering cars parked on the street.

The 3,330m-high Mount Etna erupts several times a year, spewing lava and large amounts of ash over the Mediterranean resort island. The last major eruption occurred in 1992.

The lava flows from the volcano have left behind fertile farmland. Red and white wines, the most popular wines of Sicily, are made from grapes grown on the slopes of this volcano.
