High technology application - sustainable direction in agricultural production

The Center for Plant, Animal and Aquatic Breeds, Department of Agriculture and Environment develops quality plant varieties using tissue culture method.

The method of propagation by plant tissue culture technology is the most advanced technique today and is increasingly popular with many outstanding advantages, helping to quickly overcome the degeneration of plant varieties. This method allows asexual propagation to quickly and uniformly produce plant varieties, completely preserving the characteristics of the original plant, overcoming the disadvantages of other asexual propagation methods such as grafting, cuttings. Therefore, tissue culture is considered the "key" to developing CNC applied agriculture. Identifying that, the Center for Plant, Animal and Aquatic Varieties, Department of Agriculture and Environment has established a tissue culture room, successfully applied to the production of purple sugarcane, white sugarcane, some forestry trees (hybrid acacia, eucalyptus), medicinal plants (polyscias fruticosa) and some high- value crops such as asparagus, phalaenopsis orchids... In particular, the center has coordinated with research institutes to apply tissue culture technology to graft growth tips to create disease-free citrus trees, propagate in 3-level greenhouses to prevent dangerous pests, produce seeds to serve the seed demand for implementing the citrus replanting project in Hoa Binh province.

Comrade Nguyen Van Hung, Director of the Center for Plant, Animal and Aquatic Breeds, said: Tissue culture technology is a step forward in the development of CNC agriculture, helping farmers proactively source seeds of valuable crops on the market. From there, it changes and raises awareness of modern farming models to increasingly expand the scale and economic efficiency in farming in the face of the adverse impacts of climate change.

Along with the application of tissue culture technology, the province is implementing many types of CNC in agricultural production. The whole province currently has about 150 facilities applying intensive integrated management technology, certified with VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic standards for crops, livestock, and aquaculture products, with a total area of ​​about 2.3 thousand hectares of crops, over 200 thousand square meters of aquaculture, and 1.6 thousand tons of meat products/year. There are 120 livestock and poultry farms, of which 41 are large-scale farms, the rest are medium-scale farms; most of the farms apply closed barn systems, automatic feeding and drinking troughs. Over 50 agricultural production facilities with an area of ​​nearly 1,000 hectares of upland crops apply water-saving irrigation technology.

Hoan Phuc Hoa Binh Limited Liability Company, Sub-area 6, Luong Son Town is one of the first units in Luong Son District to apply CNC to agricultural production. On an area of ​​7.3 hectares of land, the company invested in a greenhouse system using modern American technology to grow Phalaenopsis orchids. All orchid varieties use modern tissue culture methods.

Ms. Bui Thi Viet, Director of Hoan Phuc Hoa Binh Company said: Applying technology to grow orchids in greenhouses, all light, temperature, and irrigation water are automated. This allows the company to produce batches of quality orchids in bulk according to the right seasonal schedule. In particular, with tissue culture products, we can proactively source healthy, quality orchid seeds and have many flower colors according to our wishes. Currently, the company has more than 50 types of orchids with different colors.

To support and facilitate the application of CNC agriculture, the provincial Department of Agriculture has completed and released the software "Management of pest and disease database", including software running on the web platform and applications on mobile devices and the software "Management of thematic maps, analysis of agricultural land adaptation in Hoa Binh province". Currently implementing the issuance and management of planting area codes on the information system and database for issuance and management of national planting area codes. The province has built and supported 6 CNC agricultural and clean agricultural projects (3 projects on breeding pigs and commercial pigs with a total area of ​​over 100 hectares; 3 projects on bringing tissue culture biotechnology to the fields). The Provincial People's Committee has approved the implementation of 44 provincial-level science and technology tasks, ordering the Ministry of Science and Technology for 6 rural and mountainous projects. The tasks mainly focus on applying biotechnology to crops and forestry plants, applying invitro technology in seedling production; applying drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation technology in greenhouses or in the wild; applying preservation and processing technology for some local products such as oranges, grapefruits, and Da River fish. In particular, industrial-scale cultivation and livestock farming technology is applied in rural mountainous projects.

Comrade Nguyen Hong Yen, Director of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, said: To apply CNC to agricultural production in a synchronous and large-scale manner, the province should select key crops and livestock of the locality. At the same time, determining which stages can apply CNC on a large scale must be implemented first; continuing to research and test stages that cannot be applied before applying on a large scale, especially the stages of preservation, processing, or new preparations to improve productivity and quality. The mindset of applying CNC must also be implemented in a chain, because the province is aiming for agricultural production in a chain. In addition to state support, the province needs to call for resources from enterprises, because enterprises themselves are the leading force playing a decisive role in applying CNC in production.
