International stars come to Vietnam to perform and dress simply, but just by singing or picking up a guitar, you can tell who is truly talented, no need to argue to get tired.
Dan Reynolds couldn't be simpler but sang live at 8Wonder Winter 2024 - Photo: QUANG DINH
Appearing on stage at 8Wonder Winter 2024 on the evening of December 8, Imagine Dragons - the legendary Grammy-winning band - could not have dressed more simply.
Dan Reynolds, Daniel Wayne Sermon and Ben McKee each have their own style, none of them "match" each other. Dan Reynolds also wears shorts and short-sleeved shirts. The other two are more "stylish" but compared to Vietnamese stars, they can't keep up.
But on stage, Imagine Dragons are a unified whole, blending and sublimating together.
Imagine Dragons' Fire in Hills performance at 8Wonder winter 2024
Dan Reynolds sang live for 75 minutes straight. The band took the audience from one emotion to another with a series of hits Fire in these hills, Thunder, Bones, Take me to the beach, Bad liar …
In October, the world's most famous quartet Bond came to Vietnam to perform in the program Bond live in Vietnam .
If the organizers had not come up with the idea of the quartet wearing Vietnamese ao dai in a few opening acts, the whole group would have just worn simple, unfussy dresses. But when they played their instruments, it felt like there was a hot, living lava right in front of them.
Last year, world-famous saxophone artist Kenny G performed in Vietnam wearing only a formal suit from head to toe.
Michael Learns To Rock, Backstreet Boys, Westlife, Maroon 5, Charlie Puth, Katy Perry... come to Vietnam to perform or go anywhere, they dress very simply.
And it is rare to see a show having breaks where other artists come on to sing so they can go and change into other costumes. It is rare to see a show where you change 4-5 outfits, or even 10-12 outfits like many Vietnamese artists.

Of course, who doesn’t like seeing artists dressed nicely? Artists who dress neatly and take care of their appearance show respect for the audience. But in our country, this seems a bit… cumbersome and too important?
My Tam pays close attention to what she wears on stage. At the My Soul 1981 live show in Vung Tau in May, Tam changed 12 outfits. From a denim skirt with a ruffled crop top, a white skirt with a two-strap crop top, a layered skirt to a floral print dress…
When doing the Q show to celebrate 15 years of singing, Le Quyen was not far behind when she changed 8 outfits. From tight dresses to long dresses showing off her curves to off-the-shoulder dresses, evening gowns... Everything. Going to a music show was like going to a fashion show.
There are artists who go to sing as if they are wrestling with… costumes. It is common for Vietnamese singers to spend billions of dong on costumes.
Wearing sensitive accessories, Dam Vinh Hung was banned from performing for 8 months - Photo: BTC
Dam Vinh Hung is one of the male singers who values and invests heavily in performance costumes. But recently the singer was banned from performing for eight months because he used offensive and sensitive badges in his performance costumes.
Many singers are also embarrassed by revealing incidents on stage. Torn pants/shirts, revealing things… are not uncommon. This partly stems from the fact that artists want to be sexier and more attractive on stage, so they wear sexy outfits. Being too sexy is counterproductive.
The above things stem from the fact that Vietnamese artists place too much importance on appearance, perhaps to satisfy many Vietnamese audiences who currently only like to "watch" music, not listen to it.
It is not true to say that performance costumes are not important, but they are certainly not the deciding factor. Dressing like a king or queen, gorgeous and magnificent, but when holding the microphone, the audience can immediately tell that you are lip-syncing/suppressing or your voice is weak and weak… is nothing to be proud of.
They will only stop at performing artists, but when they say they are singers, it makes the audience feel... wrong.
