According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment), last week, the whole province had over 740 hectares of vegetables in the Fall-Winter crop (or Summer-Autumn crop) infected with pests and diseases, an increase of nearly 340 hectares compared to the previous week.
Pests and diseases appear and cause damage with low density and mild infection rate in areas I to IV. Specifically, 85ha are infected with polyphagous pests that damage various types of vegetables, with a density of 3-5 insects/m2; nearly 340ha are infected with silkworms and green worms, with a density of 5-10 insects/m2; nearly 40ha are infected with thrips, with a prevalence of 3-6%, and vegetables affected include: watermelon, squash, and various fruit vegetables; 25ha are infected with flea beetles and melon beetles, with a prevalence of 4-8%; 67ha are infected with fruit borers, leaf and stem borers, with a prevalence of 5-10%; 56ha are infected with anthracnose and powdery mildew, with a prevalence of 5-10%.
The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection recommends that in the coming time, the current alternating rainy and sunny weather will create favorable conditions for the growth and development of pests and diseases. Therefore, farmers should pay attention to the appearance of pests and diseases to have appropriate management measures, especially paying attention to pests such as thrips, whiteflies, omnivorous worms, and smooth green worms, which cause severe damage to squash, melons, and green onions (especially bacterial leaf blight).
Depending on the mechanical composition and fertility of the soil, apply balanced NPK fertilizer, do not let excess nitrogen lead to increased risk of pests and diseases affecting productivity.
