In the 2023 summer-autumn crop, Duc Tho district ( Ha Tinh ) planted 4,600 hectares. Up to now, about 400 hectares of rice (BT 09, Lai Thom) have bloomed, concentrated in Tan Dan and Lam Trung Thuy communes. The main crop rice crop is in the stage of heading steps 5 - 7, expected to bloom en masse from August 10 - 15.

Pests continue to damage summer-autumn rice in Duc Tho

Sheath blight disease damages summer-autumn rice, especially during the heading - flowering - wax ripening stages.

However, in recent times, many types of pests have appeared in the rice fields. The most worrying is the small leaf roller causing damage in An Dung, Bui La Nhan, Tan Dan communes; in particular, in 3 hectares in Trung Nam, Ngoai Xuan hamlets (An Dung commune), the leaf roller causes damage that whitens the leaves, affecting the growth of the crop.

Currently, leaf rollers have spread widely in the fields, with a relatively high density of 20 - 30 individuals/m 2 , locally in some areas from 50 - 100 individuals/m 2 , with the possibility of causing damage to rice crops after August 15 . In addition, brown leaf yellowing disease; brown planthoppers, white-backed planthoppers (instar 2 - instar 4) appear with a density of 50 - 200 individuals/m 2 , causing damage mainly to varieties such as BT09, Bac Thom 7, Nep 97 with an infection rate of 30 - 50% , locally in Tan Dan commune, in some places brown planthoppers appear with a density of 500 - 1,000 individuals/m 2 .

To proactively prevent pests and diseases on summer-autumn rice, the People's Committee of Duc Tho district has issued a telegram requesting localities to focus on directing pest and disease prevention; widely propagandize to the people about the situation and developments of pests and diseases on crops; assign responsibilities to each specialized department, localities and responsible officers to closely follow and guide farmers to prevent pests and diseases properly and at the right time.

Farmers spray pesticides to prevent brown spot disease.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tho - Director of the Center for Science and Technology Application and Plant and Animal Protection of Duc Tho district said: "In the coming time, the weather will continue to be hot and sunny, alternating with showers and thunderstorms, creating a hot and humid weather pattern that is very favorable for pests to continue to arise, develop, increase in number, density and cause damage. In particular, the third generation of leaf rollers is entering the peak stage of arising and causing damage; the brown leaf blight disease continues to develop and spread in the fields; brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers will increase in density and can cause nest fires when the rice is in the stage of full green and yellow-orange".

According to the Director of the Center for Science and Technology Application and Protection of Plants and Livestock in Duc Tho District, localities need to focus on regulating and maintaining enough water to create favorable conditions for rice to flower. At the same time, proactively warn and guide farmers to spray to prevent the third generation of small leaf rollers in late-flowering rice fields. In particular, localities need to closely monitor the development of brown planthoppers, leaf blight, brown planthoppers, white-backed planthoppers, etc. to guide farmers to prevent and control them effectively.
