In an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes" on September 27, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, said he would take "appropriate measures" to keep himself and his family safe.

General Milley's confirmation came after former US President Donald Trump on the social network Truth Social accused him of collusion and treason based on the general's phone calls to China at the end of Trump's term in the White House.

In September 2021, the US Senate received information that General Mark Milley, as Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, had twice called Senior General Li Zuocheng, Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission of China.

The first call was on October 30, 2020, four days before the US held the presidential election, and the second on January 8, two days after a crowd of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol while the US Congress was approving the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Specifically, General Milley made the first call after receiving intelligence indicating that the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) had raised its combat alert level. Next, the call on January 8, 2021 was to reassure the opponent that the US would not suddenly launch a first attack at that time.

"This is a fatal mistake, and over time the punishment will be DEATH!", Mr. Trump commented on the Truth Social account. "A war between China and the United States could result from this act of treason. To be continued!!!", the former US President wrote on the post.

"I have taken every precaution to protect my safety," Milley said in response to a host's question about concerns for his own safety.

Former US Defense Secretary Mark Esper on September 25 also expressed concern about the possibility that Mr. Trump, once he wins the 2024 US election, could "retaliate" against those who have opposed and opposed him in the past, according to CNN.
