The 2024 US presidential election promises to be dramatic.
The Bloomberg News/Morning Consult survey was conducted from January 16-22, following the Iowa caucus results that gave former President Trump victory on January 15 and ahead of the New Hampshire primary on January 23.
The states included in the voter polls are Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Nevada. These seven states are considered to have a significant impact on the 2024 US election results because the vote counts for the Republican and Democratic candidates are expected to be very close.
Assuming he is not embroiled in legal troubles, Trump leads President Joe Biden by an average of about 6 points in those 7 states.
However, the survey showed that 53% of voters in the battleground states would not want to vote for Trump if he were convicted in court. This number rises to 55% if he is sentenced to prison.
This year, Mr. Trump has faced four different criminal trials, although his lawyers are seeking to delay the proceedings until after the election is complete, or even cancel them altogether.
In total, the former US leader faced 91 criminal charges in the trials.
Voters also had differing opinions on whether states could remove Trump's name from the ballot. Specifically, 45% of voters believed that states did not have the right to exclude Trump's name, while 21% felt that this could only happen if Trump were convicted of a criminal offense.
