On December 11-12, Mr. Nguyen Duy Quang, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Khanh Hoa province, said that immediately upon receiving information about the newly inaugurated Song Than reservoir showing cracks on the dam surface and seepage through the dam, the Provincial People's Committee directed the Department to coordinate with relevant units to urgently inspect all related issues.
On the same day, the leaders of the Khanh Hoa Provincial Investment and Construction Project Management Board (the investor of the Song Than reservoir) confirmed that the unit had coordinated with the professional departments of the Khanh Hoa Provincial Police to conduct an on-site inspection of the reservoir.
As reported by SGGP newspaper, during the operation of the Song Than reservoir, Ninh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited (the operating unit) recorded cracks on the dam surface and seepage through the dam.
Specifically, at the end of October 2025, the operating unit recorded seepage in the dam's embankment corridor, with some points experiencing water flow at a rate of 25 m³/day; at the beginning of November 2025, six more cracks were observed running along the dam's surface, with a total length of over 92m and widths ranging from 5-40mm. The operating unit sent a document to the investor requesting an inspection. Subsequently, these seepage and crack locations were rectified by the construction unit and the investor.

The Song Than Reservoir, located in Anh Dung commune (formerly Ninh Thuan province), commenced construction in 2018. The project was conditionally accepted by the investor and put into temporary operation from June 25, 2025; the official inauguration is scheduled for the end of September 2025.
The project includes an earth dam over 1km long and a gravity concrete dam 304m long; the designed dam crest elevation is over 141m. The total investment is over 1,040 billion VND from government bonds, central and local budgets.
The reservoir has a capacity of 85 million m³, serving the purpose of providing water for domestic use, production, industry, and irrigation for approximately 4,500 hectares of downstream land; contributing to mitigating droughts in the dry season and floods in the rainy season.
