Floods are covering Songkhla, one of the SEA Games venues. |
Floodwaters are covering many areas in southern Thailand, forcing the host country of the 33rd SEA Games to make major changes in its organization plan. On November 26, a source from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) confirmed that all competitions scheduled to take place in Songkhla will be moved to Bangkok and Chonburi. Hat Yai and Mueang districts - the center of the organization - are currently no longer meeting the infrastructure requirements.
According to SAT, the relevant sports federations held an urgent meeting and prepared an alternative venue. Despite the urgent change, the Thai side still ensured that the logistics, stadium and technical work would be completed on time before the opening day on December 9.
Notably, the men's football group stage - the most attractive sport - will be moved from Tinsulanon Stadium (Songkhla) to Rajamangala Stadium (Bangkok). Other sports are also being arranged in new venues, with an effort to keep the competition schedule intact to avoid disruption to the travel and accommodation of the delegations.
The organizing committee will officially meet on November 27 to approve the entire plan and send notices to participating countries on the same day.
Before the flood, Songkhla planned to host 10 events:
Football at Tinsulanon Stadium
Kabaddi, chess at Thaksin University
Judo at Rajabhat University Songkhla
Karate, wrestling at CentralPlaza Hat Yai
Pencak silat at Jiranakorn stadium
Wushu at the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King's Coronation Convention Center – Prince of Songkla University
Boxing at Phru Khang Khao Stadium
Pétanque at Prince of Songkla University
The decision to move the entire event out of Songkhla is seen as a forced solution as the area is in a state of severe flooding and shows no signs of improvement soon.
