As soon as the harvest was finished, Mr. Vang Van Cu’s family quickly prepared the land to plant winter crops. In addition to traditional winter vegetables and crops such as cabbage and kohlrabi, this year his family also planted some new vegetable varieties to meet market demand and increase income.

As soon as the harvest was finished, Mr. Vang Van Cu's family urgently prepared the land to sow winter crops.

Mr. Vang Van Cu, Team 1, Nan San Commune, Simacai District shared: "Seeing the market demand, this year our family also planted cauliflower, cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, garlic... In general, we sell about 20 times a month, each time earning about 200,000 VND - 300,000 VND".

With many advantages such as being close to the district center and convenient for agricultural product consumption, Nan San has 821 households, of which more than 400 households participate in winter crop cultivation. The local government also cares and accompanies people in the production and consumption of winter vegetables.

Mr. Lu Chá Cheng, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nan San Commune, Si Ma Cai District said: "Especially focusing on villages of Team 1, Team 2, Team 3... these villages focus on their fields, which produce very good winter crops. Some other villages also grow vegetables, but in smaller quantities. They grow cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and some sweet cabbage, peas, and spices such as onions and garlic."

This year's winter crop, Simacai planted 550 hectares, an increase of 50 hectares compared to last year, concentrated in the communes of Nan San, Nan Sin, and Quan Ho Than. Not only did the effective winter crop compensate for the damage caused by natural disasters, it also contributed to increasing farmers' income.

Mr. Vu Van Khanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Si Ma Cai district, said: "Going down to the grassroots level with the commune to urge people to follow technical requirements. In addition to producing main vegetables such as cabbage and kohlrabi, the district's viewpoint is to take advantage of the climate and soil strengths of Si Ma Cai to expand the cultivation of more spice plants, increasing income for people, avoiding product congestion when it comes to harvest."

Expanding the area, diversifying vegetable and color varieties, and effectively solving the output of products, Si Ma Cai hopes that the winter crop will truly become a main production crop of the year in localities in the district, increasing income for people and promoting sustainable poverty reduction.
