According to BGR , scientists have just released the largest interactive map of the universe ever, based on data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This map is part of the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS-Web) conducted by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

The main goal of the research is to explore the formation and evolution of galaxies from the early universe.

The map covers about 0.54 square degrees of sky, or nearly three times the area of the full moon as seen from Earth. The total data collected weighs about 1.5 terabytes (TB), capturing images of thousands of celestial objects, including galaxies and stars up to 13.5 billion years old.

All of the data was captured by the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on the James Webb Space Telescope, allowing researchers to peer into regions of the universe so far away that light has traveled billions of years before reaching the recording device. This means that humans are witnessing the very first moments of the universe.

The special thing about this giant universe map is that it is designed to be interactive and open to the public for free. Users can access it directly through a browser, easily zoom in, zoom out, move around the space or switch between image modes such as RGB or NIRCam. Although it is not possible to search for galaxies by specific name, the map still provides an intuitive, vivid and familiar exploration experience for ordinary users.

The publication of the map not only serves the research community but also demonstrates the effort to share space science knowledge with the community. In the era of open data and high technology, the project shows the potential of combining space technology and the Internet to bring science closer to the public.

Since its launch in late 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope has been providing a steady stream of high-resolution images of the universe. With this new map, NASA's instrument continues to affirm its important role in the journey to understand the origin and structure of the universe.
