In a speech on March 30 at the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) held in Hainan, China, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned the relationship between the world's two largest economies .

According to Mr. Ly, any conflict between the US and China would cause serious consequences not only for the two countries but also the whole world .

"The most worrying thing is the state of relations between the US and China. The major powers have an important responsibility to maintain stable relations with each other, because any conflict between them will have serious consequences for themselves and the world. The US and China are at odds over many difficult issues, including trade and investment, supply chains, cybersecurity, emerging and critical technologies, as well as freedom of navigation," Mr. Lee stressed.

"We hope that China and the United States will stabilize their relationship and establish enough mutual trust and respect to cooperate in areas where their interests align," he stressed.

The Boao Forum, first held in 2001, is a forum to promote common development through regional economic integration. This year, the event takes place from March 28-31.

Asia's Great Potential

In addition to US-China relations, Mr. Lee spoke about Asia's great potential, as well as the need for Asian countries to strengthen cooperation with each other.

“Asia is home to more than half the world's population and Asians are increasingly better educated, full of energy, ideas and dynamism,” he said.

Realizing Asia’s potential depends on maintaining a stable, inclusive and open region. Like every region, Asia is affected by a global environment of uncertainty and strategic tensions, Mr. Lee added.

"Economic issues are being overshadowed by national security concerns. The divide in technological and economic supply chains is deepening. And this will cause huge economic losses for countries, as well as exacerbate competition and conflict," Mr. Li warned.

The Singaporean Prime Minister said that Asian countries need to continue promoting economic cooperation and maintain good relations with China, in the context that Beijing has become the largest trading partner of most Asian countries.

While national interests may differ and bilateral issues will sometimes arise, the countries should “protect our economic relations from these difficulties” and continue to do business with each other, he added.

"In addition to strengthening relations with China, countries in Asia should build a dense network of cooperation and interdependence, instead of a hub-and-spoke model," Mr. Lee Hsien Loong recommended.
