According to a ranking published on November 29th by The Economist (UK), Singapore and Zurich (Switzerland) are currently the two most expensive cities in the world to live in.
Among the 10 most expensive cities in the world are also Geneva (Switzerland), New York (USA), Hong Kong (China), Los Angeles (USA), Paris (France), Copenhagen (Denmark), Tel Aviv (Israel), and San Francisco (USA).
For the past seven years, Singapore has consistently ranked among the top cities due to soaring prices. The city has the highest transportation costs in the world because of the government's strict control over the number of cars. Singapore is also one of the most expensive places for clothing, groceries, and alcohol.
Meanwhile, Zurich's position in the ranking reflects the strength of the Swiss franc as well as the high prices of goods, household items and entertainment services. Last year, Zurich ranked 6th.
Regionally, Asia continues to experience lower average cost of living increases compared to other regions.
Four Chinese cities—Nanjing, Wuxi, Dalian, and Beijing—along with Osaka and Tokyo in Japan, were among the cities that dropped the most in the rankings.
According to a survey by The Economist , the average price of more than 200 popular goods and services globally increased by 7.4% year-on-year, in local currency, across 173 major cities worldwide. This figure is down from the previous year's record increase of 8.1% but remains high compared to the 2017-2021 period.
