“Mysterious creature from hell” in Western Australia

The person who discovered this creature quickly recorded a video and shared it on social network TikTok with the caption "Creature from hell".

Footage shows the mysterious creature, which looks like a cross between an insect and a scorpion, acting aggressively. As it moves, its tail appears to poke the ground.

The creature also appears to have wings and long hind legs that allow it to move back and forth in a menacing manner.

"Clearly we've only seen this creature in horror movies from the 1990s" – one social media user was shocked.

“It reminds me of the evil vine monster from Jumanji,” wrote another. One described it as “a monster with a gun and a cigar.”

Looking at the strange creature, someone commented with fear: "I want to go home, I don't want to stay in Australia anymore".

So what exactly is this creepy-looking creature? Entomologist Nikolai Tatarnic has the answer.

"This is a stick insect, belonging to the Phasmatidae family. Its shape is strange but it is not venomous," Mr Tatarnic told News.com.au, adding that "Phasmids are actually found all over Australia but most people do not detect them because they have a special ability to camouflage themselves."
