Students earn half a million VND/day from peeling mangosteen

Due to the high demand for mangosteen , many students in Ho Chi Minh City can earn 400,000-500,000 VND/day from the part-time job of peeling mangosteen.

Mangosteen chicken salad, a dish that has suddenly become a hit on social media and quickly became a culinary trend in Ho Chi Minh City and many other provinces in recent days, is creating seasonal work peeling green mangosteens.

At the house of Mr. Pham Duy Phi (Hiep Binh Chanh Ward, Thu Duc City) - the owner of a fruit warehouse, these days it has become crowded and bustling because there are more than 10 people here from morning to night doing the job of peeling green mangosteens hired by Mr. Phi.

*Many people were hired by Mr. Phi to peel the skin and were paid 80,000 VND/kg of finished product.*

Mr. Phi said that the reason originated from the mangosteen chicken salad dish on social networks, from which the demand for consumption was very high. "To ensure the quantity of peeled mangosteen supplied to the market, we hired more people to peel it. The average rental price per person is 500,000 VND/day" - Mr. Phi said.

Mr. Phi added that his facility is supplying the market with about 1 ton of mangosteen every day, but the demand is still very high, so he has to continuously hire more workers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien (residing in Hiep Binh Chanh ward, Thu Duc city) - a student at Ho Chi Minh City College of Transport - said that she has been peeling mangosteen for 5 days.

“I live nearby. When I saw the owner of a fruit store looking for someone to peel green mangosteens, I applied for a job. The job is not difficult and the income is very good. Working 8 hours a day, I can earn 400,000-500,000 VND. This income is much higher than working as a waiter in a restaurant or selling coffee,” Ms. Hien shared.

Similarly, Le Minh Anh - a student at Ho Chi Minh City College of Transport - is also being hired by Phi to peel the skin.

"Every day, I earn 500,000-600,000 VND, depending on the amount I do. The job is simple, the income is good, but it cannot last long, so these days if I don't have a class schedule, I come here to work" - Anh said.

According to Mr. Phi, the job of peeling green mangosteen includes two steps: cutting and trimming. The mangosteen will be peeled under running water to avoid the bitter taste, then soaked in lemon juice and ice to ensure whiteness and crispness. For each kilogram of finished product, the peeler is paid 80,000 VND/kg.

Currently, in the market, green mangosteen is being sought after by many people, the average selling price of unpeeled mangosteen is from 60,000-80,000 VND/kg, peeled mangosteen is from 400,000-600,000 VND/kg.
