Students from many universities in Vietnam participate in Hack A Day 2023 competition

PwC Vietnam has just coordinated with PwC Hong Kong to successfully organize Hack A Day 2023 - Securing AI: an international CTF competition for university students in Vietnam.

The competition attracted 26 competing teams in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from leading technology universities such as University of Science - Ho Chi Minh City National University, University of Information Technology - Ho Chi Minh City National University, University of Natural Sciences - Ho Chi Minh City National University, University of Natural Sciences - Hanoi National University, Academy of Cryptography, Academy of Posts and Telecommunications, RMIT University, FPT University, etc.

Hack A Day is an annual event by PwC Hong Kong, featuring competitions to enhance knowledge of the cybersecurity ecosystem for students from Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. This year’s theme, “Securing AI”, highlights the importance of understanding the potential risks and vulnerabilities associated with artificial intelligence.

With the aim of raising awareness about cybersecurity and promoting young Vietnamese technology talents, PwC Vietnam continues to participate in the 7th annual Hack A Day with the Capture The Flag competition. The competition is professionally sponsored by PwC with the participation of cybersecurity experts not only from PwC Vietnam but also from other countries in the PwC network in the Asia- Pacific region.

Hack A Day 2023 challenges teams with 6 popular categories related to the theme of “Securing AI” including: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, Attack & Defense (Red Team & Blue Team), Threat Intelligence & Incident Response, Web, and Binary & Reverse Engineering. Contestants will compete and demonstrate their cybersecurity skills by researching, identifying and executing strategic attacks to win as many flags as possible in the shortest time possible.

Vietnam has successfully taken 7 positions in the top 10 out of 61 teams in the Asia-Pacific region. With the highest score and the fastest completion time, team KMA.lastdance from Vietnam Cryptography Academy won the championship in Hanoi , while team OWCA from the University of Information Technology - Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City took the top position in Ho Chi Minh City. The two teams also took the first and second positions in the overall ranking of the competition. In Hanoi, team KMA.K4SEC from Vietnam Cryptography Academy came in second, and in Ho Chi Minh City, team P3rs1st3nt from Vietnam Cryptography Academy won the runner-up prize.

Nguyen Chi Quang, captain of KMA.lastdance, shared: “Through the competition, we have experienced and learned a lot, especially from challenges that my team and I have never encountered before, such as Red Team, Cloud or AI. These are very new competition contents, with high differentiation and in my experience, only PwC's CTF competition has them. We are also very happy to be the champion team in the Northern region and also the top team among the participating countries - I think this is a worthy result for the efforts of the whole team. I hope there will be more competitions so that I can develop myself in the field of cybersecurity as well as connect with other talented young people.”

The winning team members will have the opportunity to intern at PwC Vietnam, demonstrating PwC’s commitment to nurturing young cybersecurity talents, enabling them to participate in a global working environment and supporting them to prepare for their future careers in cybersecurity.

With Hack A Day 2023, we hope to provide an interesting playground and learning environment for Vietnam's future talents to learn about AI models and tools, as well as demonstrate necessary cybersecurity skills. In addition, students will also have the opportunity to connect with other colleagues to self-assess their skills and knowledge.

We believe that it is essential to support Vietnamese youth to upgrade their skills to cope with the rapidly changing technology landscape as they are the main drivers of the future of cybersecurity in Vietnam. By providing them with opportunities to learn and kick-start their careers, we hope to support young tech enthusiasts to continue to grow in the cybersecurity field.”

PwC Hack A Day - Securing AI: Hack A Day is an annual event by PwC Hong Kong, which includes competitions for students to learn more about the cybersecurity ecosystem. For the seventh consecutive year, Hack A Day has become a capacity building playground for young technology talents, aiming to better prepare them for future careers in the field of cybersecurity. The competition provides students with a fresh opportunity to work directly with AI models and tools, demonstrate their cybersecurity skills, and compete with talented peers.

This year, contestants from Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam will participate in the CTF competition.
