The newspaper "Nong Co Min Dam" was born in 1901. |
The late 19th and early 20th centuries were turbulent periods in Vietnamese history. After the French colonialists officially invaded our country in 1858 and defeated the Nguyen Dynasty, our country fell into slavery, and the people were oppressed and exploited to the utmost. Under the rule of the French colonialists, all freedom of speech and freedom of thought of the people were restricted.
However, in that context, many patriots and progressive intellectuals realized that one of the important ways to regain independence and freedom for the nation was to propagate and disseminate revolutionary ideas and fight against French colonial rule. And the press was an effective tool to achieve this goal.
Therefore, at this time, a series of newspapers were born, although in many different forms and purposes, but all carried a common mission of awakening patriotism and encouraging movements to fight for national independence.
"Gia Dinh" was the earliest newspaper published in Vietnam in 1865, under the direction of French colonialism. This was a newspaper whose main purpose was to propagate the colonial regime and to attract Vietnamese people to cooperate with the French colonial government. However, "Gia Dinh" was the first step in the formation of Vietnamese journalism in the context of the country being colonized.
Indochina magazine published its first issue on May 15, 1913. |
Next was the "Dang Co Tung Bao", published in 1885, which was one of the earliest newspapers of the Vietnamese resistance. Although this newspaper still mainly served the purpose of political education and propaganda in the Vietnamese community, it was also one of the first efforts of patriotic intellectuals to raise people's awareness of the oppression of French colonialism.
The newspaper "Nam Phong" was born in 1917, founded by Pham Quynh, marking a turning point in the history of Vietnamese journalism. "Nam Phong" mainly focused on publishing articles on culture, society, as well as progressive political views.
Although this newspaper had cooperation with French colonialism, through it, intellectuals like Pham Quynh tried to promote the role of the press in raising people's thinking about culture and society, arousing national consciousness and reflecting the burning issues of the times.
"Nong Co Min Dam" was founded in 1901 and was run by journalist Phan Chau Trinh. This newspaper mainly focused on agricultural issues and other social issues in Vietnam, aiming to raise people's awareness of rural issues, peasant poverty and the important role of agriculture in the Vietnamese economy .

"Phu Nu Tan Van" is one of the newspapers with strong influence in the Vietnamese feminist movement, founded by Ms. Cao Thi Ngoc Dung in 1929. This newspaper not only serves to propagate social and cultural issues but also focuses especially on women's issues andeducational reform.
"Gioi Chung" was also one of the important newspapers in the early 20th century, founded by patriotic intellectuals with the aim of propagating revolutionary ideas and promoting social movements, especially the women's liberation movement.
"Gioi Chung" was published from 1921 to 1925. The highlight of "Gioi Chung" was the combination of articles about women and articles about politics and society, thereby creating a strong link between feminist movements and national movements.
In addition, during this period, a number of other newspapers also appeared, notably "Tan Dan" published in 1918, which played an important role in propagating patriotic ideas and opposing French colonial rule.
The "Indochina Magazine" was founded in 1901 and was one of the important newspapers introducing Western ideas and promoting reform in Vietnamese society.

It can be seen that the press before 1925 played an extremely important role in arousing patriotism, reflecting the political and social situation, and at the same time being a channel to spread revolutionary ideas. These newspapers not only served to propagate political issues but also organized and encouraged patriotic movements and the struggle for independence.
Although the newspapers at that time still faced many difficulties and had limitations, they contributed to creating a solid foundation for the development of Vietnamese revolutionary journalism later on, especially the birth of "Thanh Nien" newspaper founded by leader Nguyen Ai Quoc.
