Nagasaki University (Japan) has just collaborated with a local system development company to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) program to support medical student training through interviews with virtual patients.

In a demonstration earlier this month, an “AI patient” simulated a fever and cough that lasted two to three days. When a person playing the role of a medical student asked questions, the AI system responded appropriately, helping to create a realistic medical examination scenario.
Nagasaki University plans to officially launch the program in March 2026. The application of AI technology is expected to improve the quality of medical education, as students have the opportunity to interact with many virtual patients of different ages, genders and symptoms.
"We will add grading and feedback functions to the system. We hope this program will help improve learning efficiency and the quality of medical education," said Shinya Kawashiri, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Nagasaki University.
