According to Daily News , Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung could not resign after being prevented by the FAT Board of Directors. Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung will continue in office until the end of his term in February next year.
On July 1, Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung announced that he was ready to resign as FAT president after being criticized by Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Thai Olympic Committee Prawit Wongsuwan for the U22 Thailand team not winning the gold medal at the 32nd SEA Games as well as the young players of the Golden Temple country fighting in the final, affecting the country's image.
Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung will continue to hold the position of President of the Football Association of Thailand until the end of his term.
After the FAT Board of Directors meeting, Amnuay Nimmano, the federation's spokesman, said that Somyot Poompanmoung's resignation would cause great damage to Thai football. FAT is concerned that FIFA will consider this an act of government interference in the work of the football federation.
Accordingly, Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung's resignation due to pressure could lead to a penalty from FIFA. FAT fears that FIFA may withdraw its decision to hold its annual congress in Thailand next year. In addition, Thai football officials are also worried that the country may not be allowed to host international matches.
Therefore, in the meeting held yesterday (July 3), the FAT Board of Directors voted against Mr. Somyot's resignation and wanted him to continue as president until the end of his term.
Mr. Prawit Wongsuwan's statements in recent days have sparked many conflicting opinions in Thailand. Mr. Prawit Wongsuwan said that he made the statement as President of the Olympic Committee, so his words cannot be considered as government interference in football.
However, Mr. Somyot today stated that Mr. Prawit Wongsuwan's statements showed interference with the Thai Football Association. "I am a man of dignity. I know what will happen to the future of Thai football. I met a member of FIFA and he said that this case is 100% interference with the football association. I tried to find a way to resign so as not to affect Thai football but now I can't. The governor of SAT ( Sports Authority of Thailand) did not approve my resignation," Mr. Somyot said.
