- On June 6, Farida (50 years old, Indonesia) disappeared while walking through the forest to sell goods at a local market near her home in Kalempang village (Indonesia). Farida's husband, Mr. Noni (55 years old), was extremely worried when he saw that she had not returned home by night and informed the people around to help search.
The next day, they found a giant 20-foot-long reticulated python lying in the bushes with a bulging belly. Suspecting that his wife had been swallowed by the python, Mr. Noni and the villagers used knives to cut open the giant animal’s thick skin.
Woman found in belly of giant reticulated python
Farida was found completely swallowed by the python and covered in its stomach fluids. She was buried with it in Pitu Riawa district of Sidrap Regency, South Sulawesi province.
Noni said: "I will always regret letting my wife go out alone. If I had been there that day, the python would not have dared to do anything to her. It really hurts to think about the suffering my wife had to go through..."
The village chief said this was something that had never happened in the village: "After the incident, we issued a warning to everyone to be careful when going through the forest. Especially women should have someone with them."
Indonesia has a large population of giant reticulated pythons in its vast, dense forests. Unlike other countries in Southeast Asia, urban development has not limited their growth.
They typically live in remote forests and feed on wildlife, but occasionally humans. It can take weeks for a python to fully digest a meal like Farida's. When the woman was found, her body was still largely intact.
Previously, in 2022, there was also a case of a reticulated python eating a human in Indonesia. The victim, Jahrah (54 years old), disappeared while harvesting rubber in a plantation in Jambi province. Later, this person was found in the belly of a giant reticulated python on the morning of October 23.
