“I can assure you that everything the Russian leadership has said, that this agreement is directly related to respect for Russia’s interests – all those factors were the basis for the decision,” Zakharova told Zvezda TV channel.
The Kremlin also said Russia had not yet decided whether to continue participating in the grain export deal - which expires on May 18.
Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed: "There are many unanswered questions regarding our part in the Black Sea grain deal."
He also said that contacts on this topic are still ongoing and that Russia will have to make a decision at some point.
The Black Sea Grain Initiative was signed in Istanbul, Turkey, in July 2022. At that time, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres signed a memorandum of understanding on facilitating the supply of Russian agricultural products and fertilizers to the world market.
