Livestock development
After more than 6 years of raising livestock, Mr. Vo Quoc Khai, Phu Thu hamlet, Phu Huu commune, Long Phu district (Soc Trang) has had a comfortable life. Mr. Khai confided: “Previously, I raised pigs for meat and breeding pigs, but due to the impact of African swine fever, the herd was damaged, causing economic losses. So I switched to raising goats for meat and breeding goats. Initially, I only bought 7 young female goats to raise, after 8 months the herd gave birth to 7 kid goats. Up to now, on average, I sell 14-18 meat goats each year, earning 50-60 million VND. After more than 6 years of raising, the number of meat goats and breeding goats sold is more than 80. Currently, the total number of goats in the barn is 20, of which 8 are breeding goats, the rest are reserve goats and goats for meat. In the coming time, I will continue to invest in developing a herd of 15 breeding goats to increase the herd of goats for meat and supply breeding goats to the market.”

Also a household that has been involved in livestock farming for decades, Mr. Ly Van Hien, Bo Lien 2 Hamlet, Thuan Hung Commune, My Tu District (Soc Trang) shared: “Thanks to dairy cows, my family has had a prosperous and comfortable life for many years. In 2013, I bought a female dairy cow to raise and the Heifer Project supported 2 more cows, bringing the total to 3 dairy cows. From the above number of cows, I continue to breed lean cows so that the number increases every year. Currently, the herd of dairy cows is 11, of which 5 are milking, the rest are heifers and calves. With 5 milking cows, each day we collect more than 60kg of fresh milk, the milk price is 13,500 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, the profit is more than 500,000 VND/day. The above amount is enough to cover the daily expenses of a family of 4 and save a portion.”
According to Mr. Khai and Mr. Hien, raising goats and cows is easy to take care of, the output of goats and fresh cow milk is stable, ensuring the livelihood of the raising households, traders come to the house to buy. In particular, with these two animals, there is not much cost for food, just need to provide enough grass and straw for the cows and goats to eat.

Since the beginning of 2023, livestock products have fallen sharply in price, due to unstable prices of pigs, cows, and poultry, and high feed prices. In addition, due to the impact of African swine fever and other diseases, animal feed production companies have been unable to sell their products, so they have switched to renting locations and outsourcing large-scale farming. On the other hand, our country's deep and wide participation and integration into trade agreements means that domestic livestock products must compete with imported goods.
Comrade Lam Minh Hoang - Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Soc Trang province said that in order for the province's livestock industry to develop sustainably, the unit continues to coordinate with localities to strengthen propaganda, orientation, and guidance for livestock farmers to build a chain linking each group and team with the same interests, share, and build a plan to organize systematic and synchronous livestock production. Mobilize and propagate livestock farmers to produce according to the orientation and signals of the market. Recommend livestock farmers to choose biosafety livestock breeds with advantages in each locality to increase product value, in line with trends and consumer tastes. Encourage livestock farmers to replicate the livestock model in the direction of farms; focus on developing livestock with advantages such as pigs, cows, poultry; diversify livestock to promote the advantages of each region and the diverse needs of each market; apply biosafety and food safety livestock farming processes, and good livestock farming practices. Regarding specialized tasks, the unit will strengthen the work of supplementing vaccinations for livestock and poultry; implement a month of sanitation and disinfection of the livestock environment. Improve the effectiveness of slaughter control, quarantine and transportation of animals; conduct specialized inspections of breeds, feed, and veterinary drugs. Integrate, complete, and concretize the policies of Party committees and authorities from the province to the grassroots level, and direct the restructuring of the industrial livestock industry towards modernization for each region .
In charge of the province's livestock industry, the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of Soc Trang will continue to implement Plan No. 89/KH-UBND, dated June 17, 2021 on implementing the Project "Strengthening the capacity of the veterinary management system at all levels in Soc Trang province, period 2021 - 2030". Implement Plan No. 88/KH-UBND, dated June 16, 2021 on livestock development in Soc Trang province, period 2021 - 2030, vision 2045, in which striving to develop pig herds, beef cattle, dairy cattle in the direction of industrial farms, high-tech farms with high-yielding breeds and local breeds with potential. Develop a plan to implement Resolution No. 07/2023/NQ-HDND, dated October 6, 2023 of the Provincial People's Council, regulating support policies when relocating livestock farms out of areas where livestock farming is not allowed in Soc Trang province. Develop a decision regulating the scale of livestock farms and central areas of wards and towns where livestock farming is not allowed in the province. Complete policies, institutions, and guidelines on the legal environment, promote attraction, encouragement, and create favorable conditions for organizations and individuals to invest, support development, and improve the livestock industry value chain. Organize support for the supply chain from input to the stages of purchasing, slaughtering, preliminary processing, processing, circulation and consumption, etc.
Through livestock solutions and the implementation of decisions of the Provincial People's Committee and Provincial People's Council that the provincial livestock sector has deployed, it is believed that in the coming time, the livestock sector of Soc Trang province will develop remarkably, contributing to creating a source of livestock meat, poultry, eggs, fresh cow's milk... not only for domestic supply but also for export markets.
