Concerted efforts to reduce poverty
Son Duong district, with 29 communes and 1 town, is home to 22 ethnic groups, of which ethnic minorities account for nearly 47% of the population. The district has actively reviewed the causes of re-poverty, thereby providing appropriate support solutions for each household.
Identifying vocational training as one of the key solutions of the district to sustainably reduce poverty, recently, the entire political system has joined in, making efforts to support vocational training for people, increase income and improve quality of life, creating sustainable livelihoods.
In 2023, the district opened 19 vocational training classes and organized two job fairs, helping to create new jobs for more than 5,400 workers, exceeding the plan by 109%. Basic social service support policies such as health insurance cards, electricity support, and production loans have created a solid economic foundation for poor households. Notably, more than VND 44 billion has been disbursed to 802 loan households, helping them have the conditions to invest in production development.
Vocational training linked to practice
Mr. Ly Van The, a farmer in Khe Thuyen 3 village, Van Phu commune, has escaped poverty thanks to support with seedlings, livestock, and technical knowledge in forest planting and goat raising. Currently, his economic model has developed stably, not only ensuring income for his family but also creating motivation for many households in the village to learn and apply.
In Phuc Ung commune, Mr. Nong Van Dan, a Tay ethnic, is also a testament to the success of the vocational training program. After attending a veterinary livestock course organized by the Center for Vocational Education - Continuing Education, he boldly borrowed capital to build a chicken farm with more than 3,000 chickens. This model brings in an average income of over 100 million VND per year, helping his family stabilize their economy and escape poverty.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hao in Tam Da commune also took advantage of the loan to grow grass and raise cows. Up to now, her family has had a more prosperous life, and at the same time, she has also supported other disadvantaged households in the village to rise up.
Most recently, the project to develop goat breeding production linked to the value chain in Son Duong district has recently been implemented in the communes of Dai Phu, Hop Hoa, Dong Quy, Dong Loi, with a support of 10 goats/household. Hundreds of households have benefited, the project's success will be the foundation for economic development, helping people have a more prosperous life, and the breath of life in the new rural village will be brighter.
“My family is very happy to receive a large herd of healthy goats supported by the State to raise and develop the economy, to escape poverty. The family is very confident that we will take care of the goats to be healthy and reproduce well, considering this as the main source of income to gradually improve our lives, so that our children can have a full education. The family will try and always be grateful to the Party and the Government for their constant care and support” – Mr. Tran Van Cuong, from Nha Xe village (Dong Loi commune, Son Duong) could not hide his excitement.
With the drastic intervention of authorities at all levels, the poverty rate in Son Duong has decreased significantly. By 2023, the number of poor households decreased to 11.58%, with more than 3,200 households escaping poverty in just one year.
Mr. Giang Tuan Anh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Duong district, shared: "Although there are many difficulties in implementing the national target programs, thanks to the consensus and high determination, the support policies have significantly changed the appearance of the countryside and the lives of ethnic minorities. In particular, the way of thinking and working of the people have had many positive changes, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction."
In the 2021-2025 period, the district aims to create jobs for more than 16,700 workers, provide vocational training for over 7,500 people and send many workers to work outside the province. The district also continues to develop specific economic models, ensuring practical support, contributing to bringing the poverty rate down to below 15% by the end of 2025.
With the right steps in vocational training and implementing support policies, Son Duong district not only improves people's lives but also becomes a model in sustainable poverty reduction in Tuyen Quang province.
