YouTube has officially announced that it will be "killing" the Trending tab and the "Trending Now" list, which have been a familiar feature of the platform for nearly a decade. The change means that the platform will no longer focus on a single aggregate list of trending content. Instead, the platform will only display the most popular content in each specific category on YouTube Charts.
In Vietnam, YouTube's Trending list is still one of the most prestigious charts, reflecting the level of interest and achievements of artists. The competition for this position used to be a race between artists and TV shows. The period when Son Tung M-TP, Jack or game shows such as Mask Singer, Rap Viet, Anh Trai Say Hi, Anh Trai Vuot Ngan Chong Gai dominated this chart reflected the tastes of domestic audiences.
"Farming views" and "racing to the top" of YouTube's trending for favorite artists is also a part of idol culture in Vietnam. When the platform removes this category, the way achievements are recorded for content will also be greatly affected.
According to YouTube, the decision reflects a shift in how users discover content. The platform will focus more on personalization tools and specialized rankings. When the Trending page launched in 2015, it was much easier to capture viral videos with a single list.
However, trending videos have expanded into more and more categories and sub-genres, making the Trending tab less useful to users. While it still shows top videos well, YouTube users are only watching videos for specific purposes. These include gaming videos, following certain streamers, or personal interests.

YouTube also admitted that traffic to its Trending page has declined significantly, especially over the past five years. Users now discover viral videos from a variety of sources, from short videos on Shorts, search suggestions, to other platforms like TikTok.
“Along with highlighting popular content in charts, we’ll continue to show viewers videos they might enjoy through personalized recommendations. This way, we can surface more popular and relevant content that feels natural to how viewers are already searching for new videos,” the company explains.
Instead, YouTube is directing users and creators to other tools. The Trending section will be replaced by “YouTube Charts” in the near future. This is a mini-page of YouTube that is designed to show some of the most popular content on the site in real time. However, it is also divided into sub-categories, allowing users interested in certain topics to have a better experience.
YouTube Charts now features new category charts including Videos, Weekly Podcasts, and Trending Movie Trailers. YouTube plans to add more content categories in the future.
For creators looking to brainstorm ideas, they're encouraged to use the Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio, a tool that provides AI-generated content suggestions.
“The Ideas tab in YouTube Studio will continue to provide personalized suggestions for creators to see what’s next for their channel. We’re also developing new ways to support emerging creators and help them get noticed,” YouTube said.
Over its nearly 20 years of operation, YouTube has seen many innovations and tweaks. Some changes have been more well received by users than others. For example, in April of this year, YouTube changed its homepage and thumbnail sizes - an issue that users have long complained about.
