How to prevent meningococcal meningitis
According to research, meningococcal bacteria can spread through the respiratory tract through droplets from infected people. The most vulnerable groups are infants and adolescents. In Vietnam, although the disease is not common, it still has the potential to become an epidemic if not well controlled.
To effectively prevent meningococcal meningitis, Dr. Ha Phuong recommends that parents pay special attention to the following measures:
- Fully vaccinated according to schedule (from 6-9 months old).
- Closely monitor children for unusual signs.
- Limit contact with people suspected of being infected.
- Use prophylactic antibiotics for close contacts of the patient.
Dr. Ha Phuong also emphasized the importance of regularly monitoring children's health; taking children to the hospital immediately when detecting unusual signs such as high fever, severe headache, stiff neck or hemorrhagic spots on the skin.
“With possible serious complications such as hearing loss, limb weakness, seizures or brain damage, heightened vigilance and active prevention measures are essential to protect children’s health from the dangers of meningococcal bacteria,” said Dr. Phuong.
Meningococcal bacteria (Neisseria meningitidis) are being warned by medical experts as one of the dangerous agents causing meningitis and sepsis in children. In particular, the disease can progress rapidly and cause serious consequences if not detected and treated promptly.
