Due to the increasingly complicated internal situation between some individuals in the Vietnamese tennis team, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training will temporarily disband the team and is expected to call up only 4 young athletes to attend the 28th SEA Games.
A few days ago, Thanh Nien Newspaper published most of the content of a report sent to the leaders of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training by Australian expert Matthaw Kavanagh about the performance of the Vietnamese tennis team at the Davis Cup 2015 in March. He expressed his dissatisfaction and "strongly" criticized a series of players such as Do Minh Quan, Lam Quang Tri, and Nguyen Hoang Thien. Expert Matthaw Kavanagh not only criticized the expertise but also condemned the daily lifestyle of the athletes he led within just 1 week. Immediately after that, in the press, Lam Quang Tri also strongly reacted to the accusations of expert Matthaw Kavanagh. He affirmed that many details in this report were untrue, slanderous in nature and that he might even file a lawsuit with the General Department of Sports and Physical Training.
Yesterday, Mr. Tran Duc Phan, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, said: “Last week, I answered the press about the disunity of the team and asked the Vietnam Tennis Federation and the Tennis Department of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training to rectify the internal situation. But now another big incident has arisen, which is the report of an Australian expert. I have read this report carefully. I feel very upset because all the scandals that have happened in the Vietnam tennis team are not new.”
During a meeting at the General Department of Sports and Physical Training on the morning of April 13, Mr. Phan harshly criticized the Tennis Department. He said: “I said that although there is no official conclusion yet, it can be seen that the disunity of the Vietnamese tennis team is systemic. Personal grudges have accumulated over time and have not been thoroughly resolved, causing internal chaos. The big mistake of tennis managers is not resolving the issue from the beginning, allowing the matter to become more serious. Once again, I have to ask the Tennis Department and the Vietnam Tennis Federation to clarify the cause of all problems. There must be an official response to the public.”
One difficulty for the General Department of Sports and Physical Training is that at this time it is impossible to conduct a "three-sided, one-word" confrontation between the insiders because expert Matthaw Kavanagh has returned to Australia, and Do Minh Quan has gone to the US.
Faced with this situation, the leaders of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training have decided to instruct the Department and the Tennis Federation to disband the team, sending the athletes back to their localities so that they can participate in two domestic tournaments (the men's championship starting on April 17 and the team championship in May). Most likely, the team will be regrouped to prepare for the SEA Games with only 4 young athletes including: Ly Hoang Nam, Nguyen Hoang Thien, Pham Minh Tuan, Trinh Linh Giang. Other "older" individuals such as Tri and Quan will not be able to participate in the 28th SEA Games.
At the latest, within the next 1 or 2 days, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training will have a final written conclusion about the incident that occurred in the tennis team as well as a decision on personnel participating in the 28th SEA Games.
