Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí09/01/2024

Beckenbauer is one of the most iconic figures in world football in general and German football in particular for many decades. He played a total of 582 matches for Bayern Munich. He also has the best and most unique nickname in the world of football to date, which is "The Emperor", in German "Der Kaiser".

With the German national team, Beckenbauer won the World Cup as a player (1974) and head coach (1990). He helped Germany win the right to host the 2006 World Cup thanks to his prestige with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

Kaiser (Beckenbauer's nickname) arrived at Bayern Munich as a youngster and quickly rose to become the greatest player in the history of the Bavarian club.

He played for Bayern Munich for 13 years (1964 - 1977) and won many titles. Notably, he won 4 Bundesliga championships and 3 European Cup championships (the predecessor of the UEFA Champions League).

With his elegant and gentle style on the field, Beckenbauer redefined the role of a libero and confirmed the peak of his career by winning the World Cup on home soil in 1974 with the West German team.

This position is the last stopper in the midfield, although this position is no longer popular, it still contributes significantly to the evolution of modern football.

After several years playing in the United States, Beckenbauer returned to Germany and won another title with Hamburg in 1982 before retiring. After Germany's elimination from Euro 1984, Beckenbauer became head coach of the national team.

At the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Franz Beckenbauer led the German team to the final and lost 2-3 to Argentina. Four years later in Italy, coach Beckenbauer and his team successfully took revenge by defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final and winning the 1990 World Cup.

He is the only defender in history to win the Ballon d'Or twice (1972 and 1976). In addition, Franz Beckenbauer is also among the 9 players to complete the "treble" of the World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Ballon d'Or.

In the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) poll for the best player of the 20th century, he ranked third, behind only Pele and Johan Cruyff.
