Gold is a heavy and rare metal on Earth. Formed in the universe when neutron stars collide, the blue planet's gold reserves have intrigued many. Photo: bodnarchuk via Getty Images. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), throughout history, humans have mined about 187,000 tons of gold from rocks and rivers, most of which is mined and produced today and used to make jewelry. Meanwhile, the World Gold Council estimates that humans have mined about 216,265 tonnes of gold to date. About 45% of this gold is used for jewelry, 22% is held in collections as bars and coins, and 17% is stored in central banks. Photo: Public domain/Szaaman/Wikimedia commons. Humans have mined a large amount of gold from the Earth’s crust, but there are still reserves. The latest report from the USGS estimates that there are about 64,000 tons of gold still in exploitable deposits. Photo: University of Göttingen (OpenAI). The countries with the largest untapped gold reserves include: Russia, Australia and South Africa... By 2024, China will mine and market more gold than any other country in the world. Based on data from research consultancy Metals Focus, the World Gold Council estimates that the world's gold reserves stand at 54,770 tonnes, while its estimated gold resources weigh in at 132,110 tonnes. Geologists say that the Earth's core contains 99% of the world's gold, enough to cover the entire planet with a layer up to 0.5m thick. Photo: Thomas McGuire, ESW Image Bank. Chris Voisey, a mining geologist and research fellow at Monash University in Australia, said that when the Earth formed, most of the available gold sank into the planet's core due to its density. Geologist Voisey added that 99.5% of the Earth's mass formed when everything was molten and can be distinguished based on density. Therefore, a large amount of gold sank to the core. Because most of the Earth's gold is in the core and the density in the crust varies widely, experts cannot determine with certainty the world's gold reserves, including the amount of untapped gold.
