Antarctica holds many mysteries that pique people's curiosity. However, with the development of science and technology, more and more mysteries are being unraveled.
Antarctica, the coldest and most remote continent on Earth, has long been the inspiration for countless mystical stories and science fiction theories. The unsolved mysteries of this white continent continue to fascinate the public.
In recent years, two of the most famous mysteries—the secret door and the waterfall of blood—have been solved.
Secret gateway
An image of Antarctica on Google Maps went viral in October because it allegedly revealed a secret entrance hidden in the snow. (Image: Google Maps)
This unusual structure was discovered by a Reddit user on Google Maps at coordinates 69°00'50"N 39°36'22"E - a barren, icy area located just southeast of Showa Station, which is administered by Japan.
Crazy theories about the purpose of the door began circulating online – from theories about a Nazi bunker to a secret city within the Earth's crust.
However, that mysterious door was nothing more than an iceberg. And the iceberg was stuck there until it melted.
Other images of the area show other icebergs that met a similar fate.
Mysterious Blood Waterfall
For many years, the color of the “blood waterfall” was attributed to red algae. (Photo: Peter Rejcek/National Science Foundation)
The gruesome "blood waterfalls," despite being named after their deep red color, are not actually made of blood.
However, it took scientists over 110 years to discover the exact cause of this color.
It wasn't until last summer that a team of US researchers discovered tiny spheres in water that caused the water to turn red upon contact with air.
The nanospheres are composed of iron, silica, calcium, aluminum, sodium, and other elements, individually. When exposed to air, the iron in these nanoparticles oxidizes, producing red-colored iron compounds. The high salinity of the water also contributes to the enhancement of this color.
This discovery has solved a centuries-old mystery in Antarctica. Previous studies had overlooked them because they were too small. Therefore, for many years, the waterfall's color was attributed to red algae.
Antarctica still holds many mysteries waiting to be discovered . However, with the development of science and technology, more and more mysteries are being unraveled.
The mysterious door and the waterfall of blood are just two prime examples of the power of science in explaining strange natural phenomena.
