900m long and leading straight to the sea, Via dell'Amore runs between the small towns of Riomaggiore and Manarola. This route is located in the northern Liguria region, the heart of the natural paradise Cinque Terre, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1997.
Via dell'Amore has been closed since September 2012 after a landslide injured four Australian tourists.
According to the Italian Ministry of Tourism , the reopening of this road is quite complicated because it is located on a dangerous cliff. This is considered a technical challenge for many years.
The renovation project officially started on January 14, 2022 and is scheduled to be completed on July 19, 2024.
Construction crews had to work on site, using helicopters to transport materials and install stainless steel mesh below. Workers had to climb mountains and move equipment up the wall with the help of ropes and steel cables to special anchors.
The total investment for the project is about 26 million USD, divided equally among several related ministries. The road will be managed by the Riomaggiore government and considered an open-air museum.
From July 27 to August 8, the path will be open exclusively to residents of Cinque Terre, Levanto, La Spezia and former residents, as well as those with properties in the town of Riomaggiore and their families.
Starting August 9, Via dell'Amore will officially open to tourists. Visitors will need to book in advance and pay a fee of about $11 for a guide during the tour.
Riomaggiore authorities said that the number of people entering and leaving will be limited to a maximum of 400 people per hour, divided into groups of 100 people every 15 minutes.
Tourists will enter from Riomaggiore towards Manarola on a one-way route.
