Ta Xua proactively prevents and fights floods

Ta Xua highland commune was established on the basis of merging three communes: Ta Xua, Hang Dong and Lang Cheu, old Bac Yen district. The commune has 13 villages, scattered along the mountainside; the terrain is fragmented, steep, with many streams, posing a high risk of landslides, flash floods and flash floods when there is heavy rain. The Party Committee, government and people of the commune have proactively deployed plans to prevent and combat floods early and from afar.

In 2024, due to the impact of storms and prolonged heavy rains, dozens of small landslides and one large landslide were recorded in the commune, causing damage to people and property; blocking inter-commune and inter-village roads for many days, directly affecting dozens of households; some crop areas were washed away, livestock barns were damaged, and traffic was locally paralyzed.

Mr. Do Van Xiem, Chairman of Ta Xua Commune People's Committee, informed: Currently, there are 10 locations in the area with high risk of landslides. Since the beginning of July, the Commune People's Committee has directed the villages to seriously implement plans to prevent and combat floods and storms; review households living in dangerous areas to promptly take measures to support and evacuate. The commune has established a Command Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Search and Rescue, the core force of which is the commune police, militia, village cadres and mass organizations, closely coordinating and ready to handle situations when natural disasters occur.

In addition, the commune has also established rapid response teams in key residential areas, with 7 members including militia and youth union members, ready to evacuate people and property in case of emergency. The "4 on-site" plan has been specifically developed, close to the actual conditions of each village. At the same time, the commune has prepared essential tools such as flashlights, sacks, shovels, hoes, bamboo poles, ropes and necessities..., ready for rescue work when natural disasters occur.

The Commune Military Command organized training on disaster response skills for village chiefs, shock troops and people, focusing on raising awareness, early recognition of landslide risks, organizing evacuation of people and property, first aid skills and initial handling when flash floods and landslides occur.

Villagers in the commune also raised their vigilance and proactively reinforced their houses and barns before the rainy season. Many households proactively moved their livestock and property to safe places when there was a warning of prolonged heavy rain. Mr. Giang A Tenh, Ta Xua village, shared: Last year, heavy rains and floods caused rocks and soil to flow down, sweeping away my house. With the propaganda, mobilization and support of the commune, my family moved to a safer area, more secure.

Despite implementing many solutions, the work of preventing and combating natural disasters in Ta Xua has encountered many difficulties. The biggest difficulty is the lack of resettlement land for households in dangerous areas, due to the steep terrain and the almost non-existent land fund with basic infrastructure. The immediate solution of the locality is mainly to mobilize households to relocate in the form of temporary intermingling with familiar households.

With the drastic participation of the government and the consensus and initiative of the people, Ta Xua commune has gradually improved its capacity to respond to natural disasters and proactively faced complex flood and rain developments.
