Dro Fernandez was surprisingly placed in the starting left wing by coach Hansi Flick in the 6-1 win over Olympiacos in the third round of the Champions League qualifying round. In the 38th minute, this 17-year-old talent assisted Fermin Lopez to increase the score to 2-0 for Barcelona.
This was Dro Fernandez's debut in the Champions League, and also the first assist for the young Filipino talent in Europe's most prestigious arena.
Dro Fernandez played 59 minutes against Olympiacos before being taken off by coach Flick, making way for Frenkie de Jong. This was an unforgettable experience for the Asian player, giving him more confidence for the rest of the season.
Previously, coach Flick also surprised everyone when he gave Dro Fernandez a starting opportunity in the 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in round 6 of La Liga on September 29. At 17 years and 259 days, Dro Fernandez became the youngest player to play in La Liga this season.
Sharing on Movistar , coach Flick explained his bold decision: “Dro is showing great form. He controls the ball well, handles it intelligently and has a rare competitive spirit at this age. He deserves that opportunity."
Dro Fernandez is a product of La Masia. He was born in Spain, has Filipino blood through his mother, and is considered one of the brightest gems of Catalan youth football in recent years.
