Why do most websites nowadays allow login via Facebook?

TPO - If you don't want to register in the usual way, most websites today will allow you to "Register with Facebook" faster and easier. Is it safe to log in to third-party apps and websites with your Facebook account?

In the modern world where the attention span of an Internet user on a new website is less than a minute, requiring users to register and create an account is a difficult requirement. Users may leave with such a strict requirement and find another website that does not require them to register for anything.

Most websites that require you to have an account understand the reluctance of users to create a new account. To ensure that they don’t lose any users, these websites have implemented the OAuth standard in their systems. The OAuth standard then gives you two options: register the usual way by filling out an online form or register with Facebook or Google.

If you don’t want to sign up the usual way, click on the “Sign Up with Facebook” button. This will redirect you to Facebook.com and check if you are logged in. If not, it will prompt you to enter your username and password to access your account. Once you are logged in, it will show you a small dialog box that describes the type and level of information you will share with the third-party site. If you agree to share the necessary information with that third-party site, click the ‘Continue’ button.

Now Facebook redirects you to the relevant third party website with an authentication code. Basically through the OAuth standard, Facebook confirms to the 3rd party website that 'Yes, this person has a valid account with me'.

The site now shows Facebook the unique code it got when it first registered with Facebook as a legitimate site/app. Facebook uses that code to verify the site's identity, then issues an access token to the site.

Websites use this token to gain limited/limited access to some of your account information, usually your name, email address, gender, etc. Logging into third-party apps and websites using your Facebook or Google account is quite secure. Major tech companies use a standard called Oauth that allows third-party websites to access and retrieve select information from these major websites to authenticate users.
