Episode 5 of the reality TV show Rookie of the Year has just aired, causing a lot of controversy among viewers, especially around the elimination of 6 contestants in one episode. In this episode, 28 contestants were divided into four groups, performing 2 songs Beautiful girl and Last Autumn in their entirety.
In this test, only the highest ranked group is safe, the remaining 3 groups are in danger. After moments of nervous waiting, the judges make a difficult decision.
Notably, 6 new recruits had to say goodbye to the program: Vu Nam Minh, Doan Van Chung, Ngo Hoang Bao Chau, Phan Huynh Kim Bao, Nguyen Viet Hoang and Ho Quang Thu.
The simultaneous departure of 6 members left a big void in the house. Contestant Bach Hong Cuong - leader of group 3 choked up: "I couldn't make everyone stay because I couldn't protect them. They trusted me so much but I couldn't do anything."
Candidates enter the 4th exam period.
The fact that 6 contestants had to leave, including Doan Van Chung - a rookie who was given special permission to go straight to the top 30, received mixed opinions from the audience.
Talking about having to stop early, Doan Van Chung choked up and shared: “Everyone tries hard for their own goals, but sometimes the effort is not enough. When I boarded the plane to Ho Chi Minh City, it seemed like I had left everything in Hanoi to join the program. I realized that this was a stepping stone for me to move up. I feel guilty towards my brothers, because of me, today everyone fell into the danger zone.”
Contestant Van Chung's having to stop received much controversy.
In response to the audience's reaction, the producer representative said that Doan Van Chung's elimination stemmed from the evaluation process throughout the first four rounds of testing. "From the first time he entered the program until now, Chung has not changed much. Your style and aura do not match the image of an idol, this is very difficult to change," the program explained.
In response to questions about Van Chung being specially selected for the top 30 in the casting round, the producer said that this contestant had shown strong energy and determination, fitting the model of a potential trainee. However, “when entering the program, that energy gradually faded and completely disappeared in the 4th round of testing”, making him no longer suitable for the program's strict selection criteria.
The producers confirmed that the decision to eliminate Van Chung was a joint assessment of both the Korean experts and the production team. “It’s not that Van Chung doesn’t have the skills, but he lacks the necessary elements of an idol. Stopping early will help Van Chung find a new, more suitable direction. We are still willing to accompany him if he continues to pursue art,” the program representative added.
Responding to the opinion that the program does not have many large performance stages, the representative of All-round Rookie said that the current phase focuses on training and professional development. The qualifying rounds are short-term skill tests, not only evaluated through performance but also based on daily practice. This is something that the audience has not had the opportunity to fully see on television.
The producer also admitted that he will find ways for the audience to follow the contestants' training process more closely in the next episodes.
Rookie of the Year (Project 100%) is a reality TV show, inheriting the quintessence of Sister Pretty Pedaling the Wind and Brother Overcoming Thousands of Challenges. The show is based on the value of the international format Show It All, opening up the most authentic stories about the arduous and fierce training journey to be able to create the only standard idol group in Vietnam up to now.
In the program, 30 trainees will undergo training according to international standards, applied to top boy bands such as EXO, Shinee... with leading experts in Korea and Vietnam. Young talents will be trained in a closed environment for 3 months at a shared house to explore and develop themselves.
