As one of the remote border communes of Phong Tho district, Mo Si San has a relatively complex terrain, many high mountains, the common altitude is from 2,400 - 2,800m above sea level, cool climate. To help people turn difficulties into advantages, gradually increase income, local authorities propagate and mobilize people to promote their existing internal resources, boldly change the structure of crops and livestock by raising pigs, chickens, growing rice, growing medicinal plants, and raising goats.
Mr. Tan Chin Lung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Mo Si San commune said, we encourage people to raise goats because the locality has a large mountainous area, many types of plants are food for goats while goats can find their own food, are easy to care for, have few diseases, and reproduce quickly. Households raising goats do not have to spend much time taking care of them. While the market is very popular, in recent years goats have been sold for 120,000 VND/kg, this price is stable, easy to sell, traders come to households to order, supply cannot meet demand".
With the support of local authorities, the Women's Union at all levels, and Vang Ma Chai Border Guard Station, many households in the commune have been supported with goat breeds and techniques. Based on the success of the models, people have maintained and increased their herds, expanding their scale of raising. Many households that do not participate in the model also come to learn from the experience to develop their goat herds. The family of Mr. Phung Chin Heng in Mo Si San village is a typical example.
Raising goats helps Mr. Heng's family (second from right) have extra income.
Mr. Heng shared, in the past, my family's life only relied on rice cultivation, corn cultivation, raising a few pigs and chickens, the economy was very difficult. In 2016, my family saw that raising goats had many advantages, so we decided to invest nearly 30 million VND to buy 15 goats to raise. A year later, I bought another herd of 50 goats, the total amount was over 70 million VND. There was a time when the goats also fell off the mountain, had sore eyes, but I was not discouraged and carefully took care of them and prevented diseases. I also built the barn carefully, the walls were built with marble bricks, the floor was made of wooden panels to create ventilation. Every day, I clean the barn regularly, ensuring cleanliness, limiting the spread of pathogens.
With good care, the goats reproduce quickly, just over a year after being raised, the goats begin to reproduce. On average, each year the goats give birth to 2 litters, each litter from 1-2 goats. For the baby goats, after a period of care, when they reach a weight of over 20kg, they can be sold. On average, each year Mr. Heng's family sells 20 goats, bringing in an income of 48-60 million VND. Currently, his family maintains nearly 60 goats, at times the herd reaches over 100 goats.
In addition to Mr. Heng's family, in Mo Si San commune, there are a number of other households raising goats with a number of dozens of goats such as the families of Mr. Tan Sai Pha (Seo Ho Thau village), Phan Van Phin (Mo Si San village)... Households are raising goats in the form of grazing. At peak times, the commune's goat herd reached nearly 200 goats, supplying a large number of goats to the market, increasing income and creating jobs for families. Goat raising also contributes to opening up a promising direction for economic development; gradually accelerating the process of converting livestock structure; contributing to increasing the total livestock herd of the commune, the annual livestock growth rate reaches 4-5%/year; raising the average income of the commune in 2024 to nearly 31 million VND/person/year.
In the development orientation of Mo Si San commune, in the coming time, we will continue to propagate and mobilize people to maintain and expand the scale of goat farming associated with the consumption market. Thereby, helping people to be more confident and bold in raising livestock in the direction of multi-crop and multi-animal farming to increase income, eliminate hunger and reduce poverty sustainably.
