On September 3, 2025, Lockheed Martin announced a new contract that the US Army awarded to the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) - a collaboration between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. This agreement is part of the indefinite-quantity and indefinite-duration production program, which was launched in 2023.

With a total value of 900.5 million USD, the contract includes missile production, support equipment, maintenance services as well as foreign military sales (FMS) packages. Notably, this is the first time the Javelin system has been exported to Brazil and Tunisia, expanding the influence of this weapon to two strategic regions - South America and North Africa.

The expansion of Javelin production reflects growing demand from both U.S. and allied forces. JJV has invested in new production lines, tooling and testing equipment this year to meet higher delivery speeds and maintain the system’s inherent reliability.

The FGM-148 Javelin is considered the standard in man-portable anti-tank systems. With its “fire and forget” capability, the Javelin allows a single soldier to destroy enemy tanks. Its parallel shaped-charge warhead can penetrate 600-800 mm of steel armor, including explosive reactive armor, thanks to its top-down attack trajectory aimed at the vulnerable roof of the armored vehicle.

In addition to its anti-tank role, the Javelin has proven its versatility by being able to attack bunkers, fortifications, buildings, light ships and even low-flying helicopters. Its standard firing range is 2,500 - 4,000 m, which can be increased to 4,750 m when launched from a vehicle. This weapon has been widely used in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and especially in Ukraine recently.

Javelin is already in the arsenals of more than 25 countries. The new order from the US further strengthens the system’s global position. Brian Burton, vice president of Raytheon’s Precision Fires and Mobility division, stressed that Javelin remains “one of the most widely deployed weapons” in the modern combat environment.

In addition to Brazil and Tunisia, the contract also includes a number of NATO allies such as Estonia, Bulgaria and Australia in the Indo- Pacific region. Mr. Rich Liccion, JJV Vice President and Lockheed Martin Javelin Program Director, affirmed that the order demonstrates the customer's confidence in the reliability and effectiveness of Javelin.

The Javelin system is currently produced at two main facilities: Raytheon in Tucson, Arizona, and Lockheed Martin in Orlando, Florida. To date, more than 55,000 missiles and 12,000 reusable launchers have been delivered to the U.S. Army and international partners.

The new contract will put Javelins on every continent except Antarctica. The expansion into South America and North Africa is not only military, but also shows that the US is increasing its strategic influence in previously under-regarded areas.

The decision to deploy Javelin to Brazil and Tunisia further strengthens the industrial relationship between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon, with the two companies committing to further investment in their production lines to ensure they can meet orders amid growing global demand for advanced anti-tank systems.
11.jpg
This nearly $1 billion contract is not simply an economic deal, but also a strategic step in the US defense policy. The decision to expand the Javelin deployment clearly reflects the effort to maintain superiority in the face of emerging military challenges around the world.

The Javelin has gone from being just an anti-tank weapon to a symbol of deterrence and alliance cohesion. Its growing presence shows the US is determined to maintain its military edge in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
