The French-based migrant rescue ship Ocean Viking has rescued 86 people off the coast of Libya after their boat sank while crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Europe, The New Arab reported.
Those rescued were mainly from Gambia and Senegal, suffering from dehydration, exhaustion and fuel burns, according to a spokesperson for SOS Méditerranée, the organization that operates the Ocean Viking. Most were minors attempting to cross the Mediterranean without their families.
Earlier, on June 6, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that 900 illegal migrants, including 39 women and 14 children, had been rescued and returned to Libya. According to IOM estimates, since the beginning of the year, 1,724 migrants have gone missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe, up from 1,417 last year.
