According to VNA on May 23, the Department of Telecommunications ( Ministry of Science and Technology ) issued a document on preventing the operation of basic telecommunications services on the Internet that show signs of violating the law.
The Telecommunications Department requires telecommunications businesses to urgently implement preventive measures and report implementation plans and results to the department before June 2, 2025.
Previously, the Telecommunications Department received a document from the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention ( Ministry of Public Security ) regarding coordination to prevent Telegram's activities in Vietnam.
Police agencies have reported violations of the law related to the Telegram application with 68% of malicious channels and groups out of a total of 9,600 Telegram channels and groups in Vietnam.
On May 24, sharing with Reuters, Telegram representatives said they were "surprised" by the announcement from Vietnam and had responded to legal requests on time.
"Telegram is surprised by these announcements," Reuters quoted a Telegram representative.
"We have responded promptly to legal requests from Vietnam. This morning (May 23), we received an official notice from the Department of Telecommunications regarding the procedure for notifying the provision of telecommunications services under new regulations. The deadline for response is May 27 and we are processing this request," the Telegram representative added.
The free messaging app Telegram has nearly 1 billion users worldwide, according to Reuters. The social network has also been embroiled in controversy globally over security concerns and data breaches, including in France.
